but no matter when you go or how long you stay, it is best to stay inside the natinoal park. At the South Rim, there are six lodges from which to choose. Book these at

Four of the lodges are right on the rim; the other two are back from the rim about 1/4 mile.

They start taking reservations a year in advance, and the best rooms book early. But any room inside the park is better than a room outside in the town of Tusayan.

The best place to stay when you visit the Grand Canyon National Park is inside the park. You can use the link from the left hand column of this page to search the availability of park lodges that are booked through Xanterra. The El Tovar is generally considered to be the best place to stay as it is the oldest and classic lodge and one of the four that are located directly on the rim. But these lodges book as much as a year in advance, so choose your dates and book your lodging reservations ASAP.

As dragonflylady has indicated, more information is needed to give you the best recommendation. I do agree with everyone, if possible, try to stay inside the park, UNLESS you happen to be traveling with kids. If you are, and if you're traveling in the summertime, you actually may want to stay in Tusayan just outside the park instead of inside the park.

The hotels in Tusayan are a bit more kid-friendly in several respects: they all have pools (none of the in-park hotels have them); the IMAX Theatre (which is FUN) is just up the street from all the Tusayan properties; there are more fast food chain restaurants in Tusayan such as Wendy's, Mickey D's, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell (they're a bit more expensive than other parts of the country, but there you go). One hotel, the Best Western Grand Canyon Squire, has an on-site play center with a 6-lane bowling alley, video games, pool tables, etc. But even if you're staying at one of the other hotels in town, you're always welcome to walk over and use the facilities at the Squire.

Tusayan is located about 10 minutes away from the canyon rim and has 4 other hotels in addition to the Squire: the Canyon Plaza Quality Inn, Holiday Inn Express, the Grand Hotel, and the Red Feather Lodge.
