First trip please help

We only have one day due to a business trip in Vegas the first week of June. From everything I've read on this very helpful forum, we will be driving and not taking the helicoptor tour. My questions are:

1. What to expect on the 5 hour drive as far as scenery?

2. Do we need to go to the National Park? Is that the only way to see the canyon?

3. We are not really into hiking but don't mind a good walk. Are there lookout places to drive to? What are the recomened viewing places?

4. Since we won't leave Vegas until 8 or 9 a.m., what can we expect for traffic and crowds once we arrive at the canyon?

5. How bad is the heat? We live in S. Florida, but the hottest I've ever been is Vegas in August.

Thank you for any information.

Scenery from Vegas to Grand Canyon is mostly desert, but as you get closer to Williams, there will be more pine trees.

You must go to Grand Canyon National Park to see the canyon, no place else!

You can walk along the rim and see many beautiful sights! Visit www.nps.gov/grca

Traffic once you get out of Vegas is minimal. I would recommend leaving Vegas as early as you can. You need the time at the Grand Canyon. Also, you really should be spending the night at GC, not enough time to just do a day trip.

Heat in June..not much. Plus no humidity. You may even need a jacket at night.

In addition to places you can walk/hike to see the canyon along the rim, there are free shuttles in the GC Village area and on the west rim. The west rim shuttle stops at several canyon overlooks. Also, the east rim going to Desert View Watchtower has several overlooks, perhaps the best. You can drive your car on the east rim drive.

Check out the www.nps.gov/grca website and become familiar with the park.

I would try to get an earlier start in the morning if you can...say closer to 7:00! The most traffic you will hit will be around the Hoover Dam area. You will drive over it on the way and traffic can and does get pretty backed up. Hoover Dam still has their check points in place and you must go thru it both on the way to and the way back. Does slow things down even more the later in the day that you go! Be aware that after you cross Hoover Dam there is construction for approx 20 miles and it's only a two lane road until after the construction. Does slow things down even more!

Traffic inside the park is the usual, it is a busy place! Parking is a premium so once you find a spot you might want to stay there! The free shuttle system is good, but keep in mind that it does makes frequent stops. Take the shuttle out the west towards Hermist Rest and view the many spots along the rim. The shuttle runs approx every 10-15 min and you can get on and off at each point and catch the next one that comes along.

There are many dinnng options inside the park, but these also are very busy. Pack a lunch if you can, sit along the rim and enjoy the beauty of what will be in front of you!

Enjoy
