see hoover dam on way to or from GCNP?

we will be driving from vegas to GC on fri 17 dec. Planning to leave about 8 am.

Please advise the quickest route and whether we should stop at the dam on this day or the return trip on the sunday. Is the dam lookout clearly marked/easy to find? Is it on the NV side or AZ?

Also, depending on the route, where do you recommend a stop for toilet break and snack for kids?

thanks in advance!

It would be hard to miss the dam, but having said that, it would be best to do as a day trip from Vegas.

Plenty of options for pee breaks with kids once you reach Kingman.

Now that the new bridge bypass is complete, visiting Hoover Dam is a detour from the route on the Nevada side. It probably takes more time to visit than it did in the past. I would recommend that you drive directly to GCNP, Hwy 93 south from LV to I-40 at Kingman, east to Williams and north on Hwy 64 to GCNP.

You won't see the dam from the bridge. As already suggested, you may want to make this a day trip while you are in LV, but don't take time from your limited time going to GCNP.

Enjoy your trip!

Hoover Dam only is 30 minutes from Las Vegas. You need to take the new bridge. The road over Hoover Dam into Az is closed. Hoover Dam is clearly signposted from us93. If time permits I'd do it on the way back from GC.

Your main focus is the Grand Canyon so skip the Hoover Dam both ways and do as suggested above and visit it as a day trip from Vegas! You won't feel rushed when you're there and can really take your time and enjoy it.....both places :-)

We would like to see the dam from afar and take some pictures only (not the guided tour nor visit nor walk on the dam itself). Is this possible? Is there a lookout point / parking lot before or after the bridge? We will be en route from DVNP to GCNP by end of May.

Thanks !!!

You can't see the dam from the bridge and it's restricted to stop. Also no parkinglots. You''ll have to leave us93 at the Nevada side and drive to the dam. (taking the old road)

Thank you, Tet. I was hoping for a lookout point along the old route you mention before reaching the dam itself, but maybe there isn't any.

That's the way it used to be prior to the new bypass but it's not the case now. In fact, if you've never taken the "old" route, you probably wouldn't even know that you're anywhere near the Hoover Dam or that you're even on a bridge!

In anycase, there is no "dam lookout" and, in fact, it wasn't clear to us last month where we would get off 93 to visit the Hoover Dam if we wanted to. It's probably clearly marked as Tet indicates but we didn't catch it and, unfortunately, none of our maps or GPS units have been updated, so they were no help.

You can drive directly to the Dam from the Nevada side and park in one of their visitor parking lots. From there you can walk up to and along the bypass bridge. There is a pedestrian walkway that is separated from the traffic. From there you can see the Dam from a little ways away.
