Grand Canyon in a day

Next stop in a June cross-country National Park trip is Grand Canyon. Our family will be driving from Bryce and plan to spend the afternoon at the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. We will be camping 2 nights at the North Rim. Wondering if there are any other stops we should do on the way to GCNP? Also, we will have one full day to spend in the park. Wondering what highlights we should not miss? Is there anything close in the area that is a must see/do? We plan to leave the following day for Zion. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Between Kanab and the GCNP NR is mostly wilderness. Get to the park as fast as you can with just one stop. Don't miss Jacob Lake Inn for cookies. Buy twice as many as you think you'll want because if you don't you'll be kicking yourself when you're 30 miles down the road.

There is a zip line in Glendale between Bryce and Kanab. Over near Best Friends is Moquoi Cave. Sort of touristy but in the cave they have lots of rocks lit up under blacklight that is very cool to see.

Before you get to Jacob Lake,(be sure to stop in for cookies) there is the Le Fevre viewpoint that looks over the Grand Staircase.

Also near Jacob Lake is a fire tower that you can go into if the guy is working that day.

Once in GCNP be sure to drive to all the viewpoints, which are sort of spread out.

The annual GCNP star party is June 16-23. Astronomers from all over set up their telescopes on the lodge patio. It is a great event. The volunteers point out stars, satellites and when I was there, they pointed out the space station flying by.You are allowed to look thru the telescopes.

On the way to Zion(or on the way down from Bryce) check out Coral Pink Dunes State Park. You can enter/exit via Hancock Road which is near Best Friends/ Moquoi Cave and enter/exit via the county road outside Mt Carmel Jct.

On the way into Zion, be sure to stop at Canyon Overlook, just east of the tunnel.

The two "must see" things at GC are sunrise and sunset.

<<Is there anything close in the area that is a must see/do?>> Yes - Lake Powell. It's about 3 hours from Bryce, 90 minutes from Kanab and 2.5 hours from Grand Canyon North Rim. If you're going to be in this area anyway, you've come too far not to see it. Not only is it beautiful (think Grand Canyon with water in it), but there's lots of fun stuff to do there, both land- and water-based. The Colorado River Discovery float trip is probably the most popular activity in the area, seconded closely by 4x4 slot canyon tours, boating on Lake Powell (by rental or tour boat), easy but scenic hikes. There is only one lodge at the GCNP North Rim. The patio is on the back side of the building, overlooking the canyon. If you don't have reservations to stay inside the park for those dates already, it could be a tough order.
