Planning a 2 or 3 day trip to the GC

Hi, my husband and I are planning to ride our motorcycle to Grand Canyon, we have never been there before and wanted to know if there are some kind of package deals. Any recommendations, we would like to go rafting.

Thanks for any input

The GCNP will sell you raft trips, but they take place in Page and you're better off booking it on your own.

Book a night or two at the park and self tour the Grand Canyon while you're there. www.grandcanyonlodges.com

Then go to Page and spend a couple of nights to do the raft trip.

Just understand that the raft trip mentioned is a smooth water float. There is a 1 day whitewater rafting trip, but it takes you away from GCNP and takes an entire day, a lot of which is spent coming back afterwards.

Look at Top Questions at right.

It sounds like you don't have any lodging booked. If so, forget about who's got package deals and get some reservations in PRONTO. Grand Canyon lodging books up several months in advance. If your trip is just around the corner, you may have to settle for staying in Williams or Flagstaff (60 and 90 minutes from the park respectively). Both communities are biker friendly and you'll certainly meet other riders from all over the world.

As for rafting, Bob B and RedRox have correctly stated that single day Grand Canyon rafting trips occur in areas outside the National Park. Anything that traverses Grand Canyon National Park is multi-day (4+ days and up) white water. Smooth water rafting trips (those that do not go through any rapids) put in at the base of either Hoover Dam or Glen Canyon Dam. The Glen Canyon trip from Page AZ is very popular. You can take it as an all-day package with round-trip transportation from Grand Canyon South Rim, Williams or Flagstaff or as RRx suggests, simply make the time to go up to Page and take the trip directly from there as a half-day.

For white water raft trips (with rapids), the only single-day trip option takes place on Hualapai Indian Tribal Lands. Here again, you can take the trip out of Williams or Flagstaff with round-trip transportation included, or go direct to the source, in this case the Hualapai Indian Tribe, at Peach Springs AZ. Peach Springs FYI is part of the old Route 66 which is very popular with bikers.

Here's a video that discusses these and other rafting options in the Grand Canyon area ->: http://youtu.be/iYRqtDrlWBw
