Sunset near Red Feather Lodge

Hello,

We are staying at the Red Feather Lodge and were wondering where is the best place to view the sunset within an hour to an hour and a half from our hotel.

Thank you!!

Definitely go inside the park. Red Feather is very close to the park entrance and you will see nothing at the motel. Go inside by all means.

It may not be intuitive to understand but essentially ALL of the "views" around the Grand Canyon require you to be standing at the rim, looking down into the Canyon. When we talk about viewing sunset or sunrise, it's not the usual experience of watching the sky and the horizon, it's really about the colors on the rocks inside the Canyon. So, for any of the views, including sunrise and sunset, you need to be in the Park and standing outside right at the rim. This is one of the reasons why most of us strongly recommend overnight accommodations in the Park.

The closest and most crowded view point will be Mather Point. What would normally be a 15-20 minute drive could take an hour or longer before sunset. Leave earlier and be anywhere else inside the park. There's nearly 30 miles of rim and dozens of view points. If you see a bus, go somewhere else.

Many thanks to you all. It's our first trip to the canyon and I like to be well informed when we travel. Insider secrets are the best. :)

Any other tid bits of advice?

We will be in the area the following day. Any favorite, do not miss pointers?

Also, is it worth seeing sunset AND sunrise? Are the colors dramatically different?

As noted, sunset and sunrise aren't about watching the sun in the sky. It's what happens on the cliffs and walls in the canyon. Sunset and sunrise are completely different.

OK, I hate to sound like a broken record but, honest and truly, the best insider secret is to stay inside the Park.

My other favorit is the Park's seasonal visitors guide ("newspaper"). Lots of really good info and well worth browsing for ideas. The indoor exibits are often overlooked but are usually really interesting; there's a lot of cultural history there.

Can't stress that enough. Staying inside the park would be exponentially better than staying in Tusayan, and no offense, but Red Feather is probably the worst place in town.

I'm not trying to scare you. The bed you sleep in is a minor issue. The location of that bed, inside the park, is paramount.

Thank you all.

RedRox - We had to choose Red Feather because everything else inside the park was totally booked. We had no other choices. Unless you have some sort of connection, we are stuck there. ;(

Again, thanks everyone.
