Hello. Having spent a great deal of time reading through previous trip reports and the general advice replies, I think I am making the right decision to visit the Grand Canyon by doing a selfdrive overnight stay from Las Vegas.
Back in 2008, we did an expensive heli-tour which landed in the west region of the grand canyon but ever since that trip I have vowed to return to the 'proper' GC and visit the south rim.
Luckily I have managed to book an overnight stay on March 17th at El Tovar with a dinner reservation too.
We are planning to rent a car from LV and early in the morning. Taking advice I've read here, we will not stop at the Hoover Dam on route.
If we arrived at the GC around lunchtime or just after, what would you advise for us in order to see some great views. We hope to see the sunset from the ElTovar rim before having dinner.
We are wanting to do short walks along the rims. Should we drive to specific view points or catch the shuttle buses?
We plan to spend our second day again at the GC and then leave late-afternoon (before dark) and stop perhaps halfway on route back to LV as we didn't want to drive for 5hours after a wonderful day at the GC.
I read a great review and saw the photographs from someone's visit back in March 2010 - there was alot of snow around in his pics - is that the normal weather for mid-March?
I would be so grateful for any further advice and suggestions on how to make our 2day visit to the Grand Canyon as memorable as possible.
