Sunset in June at the Grand Canyon

Hello everyone,

We are planning a trip to the Grand Canyon and Sedona in early June and I was wondering approximately what time the sun sets over the canyon at that time of year. We are staying at El Tovar and want to dine there for one or two nights but want to make the reservations around sunset time. Will we have a view of the sunset from the restaurant or should we eat earlier and go outside to see it?

Thanks in advance for your help!

You won't really have a view of the sunset from El Tovar, best to be outside on the rim. Sunset will be around 7:45pm

Don't make the mistake of thinking you will book a table by a window and watch the sunset....won't be the way you in-vision it!!

Either make your dinner reservations early and enjoy the sunset outside or later after sunset!!!

The El Tovar bar has outside seating with a limited menu, so one option would be a light meal there, where you can see the sunset; however, you may prefer to view sunset from the edge of the rim.

The views are also good from most of the tables in the back dining room at El Tover (a smaller dining area than the main room). I've been seated there twice (didn't ask for it--just luck of the draw--so I'm not sure how easy it is to get a table there).

Be on the rim for sunset. If your feet are on a floor or your butt is in a chair inside or attached to a building, you will NOT be able to see the canyon at sunset.

You can search sunset times for specific dates on the link at the park website. Plan to be outdoors for the hour or so before sunset and at least 15-20 minutes afterward. When the sun goes down also expect to be entertained by deer and elk who will be wandering the rim path and grazing on the lawns around the hotels.

It is not the sun setting that is the point. It is watching the changing colors and shadows in the canyon. That requires being on the rim, and getting there 1/2-1 hour before actual sunset. If you are sitting on the porch outside the El Tovar bar, you'll know when the sun sets, but you won't see anything special.

Thanks for your help! After hearing this, I am going to change our reservations to well after the sunset. Any ideas about where the best spot would be to watch the sunset while staying at El Tovar?

No such thing as a "bad" spot. Depending on how much time you have, you might take the Hermit's Rest shuttle out to someplace like Hopi Point, or just walk along the Rim Trail until you find a spot that strikes your fancy. Whatever you choose, make sure you're at your chosen viewpoint about 30 minutes prior to sunset and try to hang out until 30 minutes after sunset. That's when the light changes most noticeably. Sunset in early June is ~ 7.40 PM.

The best place on the rim IMO is away from crowds. If a bus goes there, don't. Walk from El Tovar east toward Yavapai. Plenty of places to step off the path and plant yourself
