Phoenix to Sedona and GCNP Itinerary?

Family flying in and out of Phoenix for week July 2013. Have reviewed several posts in the forum but would welcome group thoughts. Thinking three nights at JW Marriott upon arrival, one night in Sedona, then one night at or near GCNP (guessing near since lodges on site booked). Struggling with how to structure return trip. Back to Sedona? Stop elsewhere such as Flagstaff. Could extend an additional day depending on logistics. As always, help on forum is much appreciated.

Also, for GCNP, assuming we focus on the south rim?

If the in-park lodges are fully booked, stay in Tusayan which is right outside the south gate - and yes, stay with the south rim with only one week.

Is there a special reason you want to stay in Phoenix for three nights? If no, I'd give a second night to Sedona, and maybe at page to the itinerary, with one or two nights.

Between PHX and the GC, one way you should maybe take the scenic route along 89 and 89A through Jerome and Prescott, and Wickenburg. if you want to experience a 'real' authentic Western Town add a night in Wickenburg . Maybe your last one except if your flight out of PHX is extremely early. Wickenburg - Sky harbor is only a bit over an hour's drive.

Agree with Esty. 3 days in Phoenix with the intense heat will be rather long imo. You'll find resorts in Sedona as well. If you find all lodges in GC (yes South rim) booked call for cancellations 888 297 2757

Thanks to you both. Will look into Page and the other locations mentioned. Still learning. Phoenix/Scottsdale was attractive due to available resorts/water parks esque amenities (and ability to use lodging points). Thinking maybe it makes more sense to head straight to Sedona for two nites, one nite at GC and return through the ideas noted above. Follow with decompress in Phx for remaining dates.

Your plan is improving. You'll want to get out of PHX ASAP to avoid the extreme heat. Spend that time in Sedona instead. Four nights is a good start. Water activities in Oak Creek will be way more fun than any pool in PHX with 110-120 degree temps.

One night at GCNP is usually sufficient. Two or more for Page makes a good addition.

Sedona is also the best place to decompress. You won't understand it until you experience it. It is one of the most relaxing places in the world.
