West and South Rim in 2 - 3 days

During July this year we (me and wifey) will be in Las Vega for a few nights and would like to visit the Grand Canyon (GC)...

We would like to visit the sky walk, Hoover Dam on the way and then get into the 'real' canyon (Assume that's more South than West rim?)..Ideally do a half day hike/trail/tour into the canyon and appreciate some of the beauty of the mountains and the landscape...

I may be being silly here and may be able to do the latter part above in the West Rim too but cannot find anything.

I would appreciate any guidance around potential tours / treks and where would be recommended for staying?

Many thanks in advance

The West Rim is a tourist trap that is not at Grand Canyon National Park. Also very expensive. Plus not on the "way" to the South Rim. Just head to Grand Canyon Nat Park South Rim and spend a night there. Try to get lodging inside the park. www.nps.gov/grca for plenty of information

There is no lodging or hiking at Grand Canyon West, which is a tribal park at the very west end of ther Grand Canyon. It is 3-4 hours from Las Vegas depending on road condition, and about $100/person. It is still 5 hours from the real Grand Canyon National Park, the same amount of time from Las Vegas to GCNP.

Your best experience will be to head for GCNP for overnight, and see Hoover Dam on the return.

There is no west rim. You pay an awful lot of money to gaze down into a side canyon ... go to the south rim, you want be disappointed. Save yourself the waste of time and money with the misleadingly named 'west rim'. The best views and panoramic vistas are from inside the south rim GCNP (or the North Rim, but this is not an issue here) - which was put where it was put for a reason.

Ditto. There is no west rim of the Grand Canyon. Only a high priced tourist trap where the sky walk is located. That's the biggest rip off of them all. If you go there you will spend close to $100 pp for a 20 minute walk on a piece of glass situated a mere 800 feet above a side canyon. Skip it.

Go to the GCNP south rim and stay two nights if you can get lodging. Don't be surprised to find everything booked up for July at this late date. Call Xanterra for reservations 303-297-2757 from outside the USA. From inside the 888-297-2757

Thanks all for the replies..

so point taken, will avoid the west rim as not too keen on seeing just a 800m drop for that many bucks.

What would best 2 - 3 days tour for the South rim? Would ideally like to get a hike done, helicopter ride and water rafting...(pushing it?)

Thanks so much

No rafting available in the GCNP in that short time window. Add two nights at Page and do the raft trip there.

Just so that it's clear, you don't *need* a helicopter or a raft trip to "tour" the Canyon. In fact, before you worry about activities, concentrate on finding lodging. July is a peak month for visitors and you may find that availability is limited. I would call Xanterra and try to make reservations before you do anything else (toll free within the US (888) 297-2757 or (303) 297-2757.) You can find descriptions of the lodges here at www.grandcanyonlodges.com. If nothing is available in the Park, look for a place in Tusayan.

I assume you're driving a rental car to the Park? It's a 4.5 hour drive to the Park from Las Vegas. I'd recommend two nights in the Park so that you have a full day at the Canyon.

Browse the Park's website to familiarize yourself with the layout and various services:

http://www.nps.gov/grca/index.htm

The Park "Newspaper" has some maps, along with shuttle schedules, restaurant hours, ranger programs, etc. (this is the current spring guide; the summer guide should come out in May):

nps.gov/grca/…2013SRspring_letter.pdf

If you're interested in dayhiking, read about hiking in the Park website at the link above. Pay special attention ot the "summer hiking" conditions and warnings.
