Helicopter trips GC. North or South

Hi

I am visiting G.C as part of Canyons and Parks 14 day tour. There will be opportunity (money allowing) to have a helicopter trip on either north or south rim. I would appreciate opinions and recommendations please. Thank you.

There are no helicopter trips that originate at the north rim. Heli trips leave from the south rim, at the airport just outside the park, though they do fly across the canyon for views of the north rim.

There are also flights that leave from Vegas that go to the west rim, which is NOT the national park. That is on tribal land, where the canyon is not as deep, wide or colorful.

If you want to fly, go in the morning when the air is smoother and colors more vivid.

Thank you very much.

This will be part of an optional excursion during our escorted tour of Canyons and Parks, so my details are sketchy. I know we will stay 1 night in GC so it might seem the trip will be in the morning.

With just one night at the rim I'm not sure I'do the heliflight. Views from the ground already will exceed you expectations.

With just one night at the park, and hopefully it really is in the park, I'd skip the helicopter flight. It's a thrill ride, but can't take the place of time on the ground on the rim.

This sounds like the Globus "Parks and Canyons Spectacular" tour. If so, the trip brochure does state that they stay inside the park at the South Rim, so no worries there. And they do offer a choice of two helicopter flights while at the SouthnRim, so it would be in the morning. One is $213,described as a 30-minute flight in an EcoStar copter. The other is $199, also for a 30 minute flight, and is described as aNorth Canyon tour, but mentions the same Dragon Corridor as the first flight, plus Temple of Ra.

You will arrive at the Grand Canyon from Bryce the previous day, so have the afternoon, evening, and morning to see the canyon. If helicopter flights are something you enjoy, then this could nuance your appreciation of the Grand Canyon. As to which one to pick, maybe K-Bot or someone else can determine the difference.

I do not know how to create a link to the web page, but if you go to the Globus " Parks and Canyons Spectacular" tour and look under Optional Excursions, they describe both helicopter flights. They do not specify the EcoStar bird in the North tour, so maybe that is the difference?

Thank you all for your advise.

I have returned from a magnificent 2 week "monuments and Parks" tour Western US.

We did the helicopter trip over the GC. Whilst seeing the Canyon from the rim is truly awesome, we felt we only truly appreciated the sheer grandeur, scale, diversity and beauty of it by flying over. For us it was expensive but truly worth it.

We took the eco star helicopter, 6 passengers, and which provided good vision for all, especially for those fortunate enough to sit in the front seats near to the pilot.

Some of our co travellers chose a slightly cheaper flight with another company and were bitterly disappointed. They complained of some being cramped, facing backward, seeing very little.

I must acknowledge that during the time at South rim GC we were not disturbed by any noise from helicopters. Apart from our own trip I did not hear any atall. I imagine there must be strict control not to pollue with noise this exquisite gift grom nature.

Lena, thank you for giving us an update on how your trip went. I'm so glad you enjoyed the Canyon.

That's because the Village areas of the Park are in the "no flight" zones. Ironically - at least for backpackers who trek to the more remote parts of the National Park only accessible by hiking - the commercial helicopter flights are concentrated over otherwise pristine areas of the Park. Hike in those areas and you hear the drone of helicopters from 8am to 5pm, non-stop. It's so constant, you almost don't "hear" them until they stop.
