Any hotels outside south rim? Driving frm Flagstaff/Phoenix.

Hi, any hotels just outside of the park? If so, which family, friendly ones are suggested?

There are several hotels in Tusayan, the small town just outside of the main gate:

If the Park lodges are not showing availability at www.grandcanyonlodges.com, I recommend giving Xanterra a call to see if there are any cancellations.

The hotels in Tusayan definitely do not have the charm that the lodges have, but I do stay there when I have visited>> http://www.tusayanhotels.com/index.html

How close to the park do you want to be?. Staying inside always is recommended.

Staying outside the park will not save you any $$ if that is your concern! If as DTF stated, the website is showing no availability call them direct at 888-297-2757.

The park has accommodations for every budget providing you call way in advance! If your trip is soon in all possibility you have to take what is open!!

So much better staying right inside the park vs outside!!

The lodges inside the park begin accepting reservations a year in advance. People book rooms and then often as time goes on plans change and the reservations are cancelled. If you look online and there is something within the park that fits your needs, take it right away. There is a 48 hour cancellation policy, so if your travel is not within 48 hours you can always cancel. If you get something that isn't exactly what you want, keep checking. It really does pay to call directly; when those cancellations do occur they often don't ever make it back onto the website--a lucky caller gets them on the phone. Keep calling and you may be one of those lucky people--I have been and it was worth it.

As mentioned, the hotels in Tusayan won't be much cheaper and usually have the same availability problems as the lodges within the park.
