Laughlin to Kingman - Google Maps "restricted road"??

Hi

Looking at the best route from Laughlin to Oatman and then onto Kingman via Sitgreaves Pass and from previous forum discussions the general advice is to use this route:

http://maps.google.ca/maps?saddr=Laughlin,+NV,+United+States&daddr=Oatman,+AZ,+United+States+to:Kingman,+AZ,+United+States&hl=en&sll=35.12723,-114.313735&sspn=0.658179,0.883026&geocode=FSGeGAIdI8Er-Sl5X791fETOgDFcLp_EzOVTpQ%3BFdd1FgIdLqUu-SkTrQ6PBxDOgDHnI9rIao3HdA%3BFcPyGAIdcrAz-Sk1YJMAE9zNgDFgpQT_vM-spg&oq=Oatman&mra=ps&t=m&z=10

However Google maps says that some of the roads between Laughlin and Oatman are "restricted usage roads" and some previous posts mention no direct access via paved roads so I wnat to confirm if this is the best route and a regualr access route?

Thanks

The restricted use roads are from an arbitrary point in Laughlin. You won't be affected. From Laughlin simply cross the river into Bullhead City AZ and follow the route from there. It will take most of an hour to get from BC to Oatman. Then it will take another hour or more to get from Oatman to Kingman. You'll want to spend most of an hour in Oatman as well. This is why we have advised you to scale back on your plans.

I did this route less than 2 weeks ago in ideal conditions. Going any faster than these times is unreasonable.

That restricted road is an unpaved part from Bullhead to Oatman. Don't take it. Just drive south from Bullhead on AZ95 to the sign for Oatman. That road is called Boundery Cone rd. Restricted road in Lauglin itself means a backroad for the outlet supplies. You won't get there. Take the Bullhead parkway with only one traffic light. If you drive through Bullhead there are many traffic lights. You also can drive south of Laughlin to the Avi resort and cross the birdge into Az. Take Casino drive out of Laughlin then.

Great - I think I'm on the right rack now.

Thanks (again) RedRox for advice....... and yes I'm scaling plans right back to get something realistic that we will be able to enjoy; we will stop in Oatman for an hour or so as you say then drive on to Kingman for the night and get an early start for the GC the next day (skipping the museum etc) and will just have the 1 stop in Seligman as I think that's worthwhile but this will have us at the GCNP on time. After that we just go as fast or slow as we feel is appropriate and while we may not get to all the sights we had initailly planned on we will enjoy what we do see :) I really do apprecaietthe great advice you have given.

Thanks Tet for the guidance - apprecaited.

According to Google Maps, the center of Laughlin is in an RV park just off the main road, hence the "restricted road" warnings. This has come up for at least three years, and I would have thought someone there would have fixed it by now. You should consider contacting Google and try to get it in a more reasonable place. Good luck with that though.

When seeking driving directions online I look at more than one "maps and directions" site to see if I get the same information. Twice this month I got different directions to the same location, and the final directions from one site merely said, "right. right." with no street name given.

As a side note, I always caution folks to be careful when following online directions and driving across the reservations. You could end up in some wash somewhere, with no cell phone coverage, stuck.

Enjoy your trip.

We take great care in these forums to advise visitors, especially those from over seas, to NOT rely on GPS and Internet map searches for routes in the southwest USA, most notably around the Grand Canyon region. There are many fire roads and back roads on Indian Reservation land that are not maintained for normal vehicles, yet GPS and map programs can plot these in route requests if settings are not specific.

When doing planning and research be careful to use main highways only. Rental car agreements prohibit driving off pavement. Finally, upon arrival in the US, obtain proper paper maps to confirm all of your route plans.

The most distressing situations that come up with visitors getting lost and stranded, often without cell phone service, happen to our foreign tourists.
