Use the East Entrance from Winslow?

We'll be staying in Winslow the night before our visit later this month, hoping to leave around 7am and head to the Canyon.

Does it make sense to head to the the East entrance (I'm sure I read somewhere that there would be smaller queues)?

Then we're planning to drive along Desert View Drive stopping at the different viewpoints before leaving the car at Grand Canyon Village and getting the shuttle bus to more viewpoints and watching the sunset from one.

That's probably what I would do -- it should be a nice drive up 89 at sunrise. It should take you about 2 hours to get to the east entrance. Sunrise will be around 6:15am that morning, btw.

Are you spending the night in the park?

Sadly not. After the sunset we're heading back to Flagstaff (along with a lot of other people by the sounds of it!)

That's too bad. You'll be missing the most peaceful time in the park. You might want to consider leaving Winslow before 7am in that case.

You should still take the time for a brief stop at the Cameron Trading Post before turning onto 64 for the east gate.

Good advice above. Yes, do enter the east gate at Desert View. A stop before at Cameron Trading Post is advised. A meal there will mean you won't need to eat again until you reach Flagstaff.

Do stay open to the possibility of staying the night inside the park if you can snag a room.

Echoing all of the above. Definitely call Xanterra every day to see if any rooms have become available. There are frequently cancellations, so your chances of snagging a room are pretty good.

If you can't call, definitely check the website 2 or more times a day because available rooms are posted there often, but not always.
