So next Augaust as part of a 22 day National park fest we're planing on coming to the GC.
It will be later Aug so around 20th or later . My kids will be 11 , 9 and 1.5 yr old. I have a Poco Premium with sundshade and am already hiking with my son in it so we're well practiced and I'll be carrying him the whole way (lucky me!) .
So I know this is going to require planning for safetys sake . I've read all about the temps and the trails and plenty of blogs including TA forums on this (I'm pretty obsessive when I get going!).
Current plan is to do this. Stop at one of the lodges Yavapai e.g . Get up at 4 for the 4.30am Bus.
I think this gets to the South Kaibob Trail at 5am?
I read that we need to get to Bright angel Camp by 10am in the morning so 5 hours to do near 10 miles seems reasonable downhill. Stop overnight at Phantom lodge. Then leave Phantom at around 4.30 to get to Indian Gardens by 9am. Then around 3pm leave Indian Gardens to get to Bright angel trail head a 10ish or earlier pm.
Caveats. I'm fit and work out and weight train. I've taken my kids on 6 mile + hikes and we're going to do Snowdown next spring which is 8 miles roundtrip and 3300 feet ascent (you can walk it). So we should all be pretty darn good at hiking by then and fitness!
I'm carrying my son , 6 L of water in a MSR Dromedary, all in about 25kg and some food in a daypack with travel poles and the cooking kit for one night.
Mrs will be carrying 3.5 L of water and food etc. Kids carrying 2L reservoirs and food. Main concern is staying out of the heat so plan of having 1L of Pedialite for the little un to prevent dehydration (he's in the sunshade which is totally amazing as it covers him all over). We'll have long sleeve technical t's for sun protection and moisture wicking and headlights for the adults and flashlights for the kids for the dark hiking. Plus a micro fleece for the cold morning or evening stint and a temprature guage (casio watch thing for $45 thats measures alt , and temp).
I plan to monitor the temp the day before so if it's extreme heat (or storms) we can cancel it 2 days before and just do the rim trial or ooh ahh point or something.
Would South Kaibab down, and Bright trail up (next day) be do-able in these circumstances. Figure it's about 2 miles per hour down (stopping every hour for 10 minutes say). Is going down South Kaibab advisable or stick to Bright Angel in case of need to stop (due to more rest points and water etc).
And going up it would be 5 miles to Indian Garden. So we'd have to walk slightly quicker up hill to make it there and avoid the heat And 5 miles to Bright angel from there. Carrying less water etc on the way up due to the refills on Bright Angel.
Given a lot of planning and good fitness and prep is this do-able. Alternatives are to spend less time in GC and just do one day on rim. or Add another day and camp at Indian on the return, but that means bringing a tent and adding extra weight and losing a day elsewhere.
