Hopi Point is THE most crowded place for sunset. A good place to avoid. No need to go all the way to Desert View. I usually just walk along the rim trail east from the lodges to find a good place. But a lot of people recommend Lipan Point, out towards Desert View.

I like anywhere around Yavapai Point. It's about a mile between there and the El Tovar hotel, all paved rim path. Walk along that path and step off where you feel drawn and take a seat on a rock. You'll be alone and have the best view.

Avoid a Hopi Point at sunset like the plague. Desert View will be almost as crowded, and you'll be looking straight into the sun. Not my favorite.
