viewing points/journey from LV

Hello everyone! we are travelling to the grand canyon plaza from Las Vegas as I am sure many of you did. The route seems to be taking us 4 hours along us 93 S and i-40 W. As we will be leaving in the morning the ETA would be around 1pm. We were just wondering if anybody can recommend any good places to view along the way or by taking detour or if not once we have checked in anywhere you can recommend that is close (ish) that is good for a sunset. Thank you.

PS we are hopefully looking to stay an extra night so wondered if anybody can recommend any day trips to do while there or a place we can drive out to and back to the accommodation in one day. thanks

You will be traveling east on I-40 not west.

You may want to stop at Hoover Dam and view the dam as well as the bypass bridge over the canyon. Othere than that, just get yourselves to GCNP.

Where are you staying? The best place is in a park lodge.

The best place to see a sunset is in the rim lodge area and east along the rim towards Yavapai Point. Be out there a half hour before sunset or a hour and have a flashlight (torch) with you.

If you have extra time, spend it at GCNP. There are some places east of GCNP to see but they add time to the drive back to Las Vegas.

You won't see the Grand Canyon at all until after you are inside the park. Even then it will be several minutes before you reach any place to park and exit your car to see the Grand Canyon from the rim. Bob has given good advice and I concur.

thank you very much. sorry yes i did mean east. Well we are flying over hoover dam on a helicopter trip but could do a stop too. Thats what we are worried/thinking about really. If we go out to a point for sunset is it safe to get back from a point nearby or is it easy to get lost. We are staying at canyon plaza resort which on google maps is 15 mins south of the south rim/beginning of bright angel trail

thanks redrox. We were thinking of finding somewhere for the afternoon/sunset if we arrive at one such as the do half of the bright angel trail up to indian gardens then drive back and then on the full day we have there drive up to monument valley for the day?

You're not going to want to watch sunset from down in the canyon. If you're avid hikers, hike down into the canyon for a mile or so in the early afternoon, then go back up. It will take twice the time going down to go back up.

Watch the sunset from near El Tovar Lodge .... parking there or somewhere else in the lodge area. Walk along the rim path east (to the right) and find a place to watch. After sunset drive back out to your hotel slowly as there can be animals crossing the road, and it will be very dark.

thanks Bob , great help! we have looked at the link and yavapai lodge looks ideal for us to stay the second night so think we are going to go with that. We do like walks being from Wales, we have some good mountains here too, not quite the canyon ;)! so we were just thinking of doing the angel trail if we got there earlier enough! yavapai point was where we were thinking of going to watch the second night!
