Is seven nights too long to spend in Grand Canyon?

Hi there - two Aussies planning a trip to US in May 2015. We will be spending time in the Grand Canyon National Park travelling by car from Las Vegas. I have a couple of questions. What is the drive from Las Vegas to GCNP like ie lots of traffic or freeways? Is there much to see on the way?We plan on lodging in the park (Yavapati) for seven nights. We are not really sure at this point on what we are going to do but would like to do some hikes, maybe a heli ride and maybe a raft trip. If we stay in the park we will have plenty to do for seven days? All help appreciated.

If you are not a big hiker, seven nights is about 4-5 nights too long.

In that time frame you could do a complete loop of the canyon to include the GC,Page/Lake Powell, Bryce National Park and Zion National Park.

For rafting, look into the smooth water triip at Page.

Between Vegas and the GC is wide open highway, mostly interstate. Along the way you can run sections of Route 66 between Oatman and Kingman, and Kingman and Seligman.

At the top of the Utah forums look at the top questions. There are sample itineraries for loop trips out of Vegas.

Agreeing. Absent a plan and a desire for agressive hiking you find that 2 nights will probably be plenty.

Consider the Zion 2, Bryce1, Page2 and GC 2 loop for 7 nights. Or consider a few nights at Sedona along with GCNP and Page.

Raft trips in the GC don't originate at the park. They require a full week or longer

There are lots of parks and natural attractions in such a small radius. There is a term coined the 'grand circle' which describes this cluster. Spend two or three nights at the South Rim. Then expand your itinerary to include such places as Sedona, Page/Lake Powell, Zion NP, or Bryce NP to name a few.

Agree with the above. 1 week is way too long at GCNP. However, IMO 2 nights at GCNP, 1 or 2 nights at Bryce Canyon, 2 nights at Zion NP and maybe 1 night in Page. Bryce and Zion are not to be missed IMO and we found the drive from GC South Rim to Bryce very interesting.

Here's a good (IMHO) video about many of the great places on the Grand Circle:

IF you do not want to do a road trip with a lot of driving you can visit Grand Canyon, Page, Flagstaff, and Sedona in a week with some day trips in the area.

Day 1 Arrive Grand Canyon mid day.

Day 2 GC

Day 3 GC to Page. Antelope Canyon

Day 4 Page . Float trip on Colorado River or boat tour on Lake Powell

Day 5 To Flagstaff. See Wupatki/Sunset Crater Nat Mon, Walnut Canyon Nat Mon, historic Flagstaff, Lowell Observatory. Stay in Flagstaff

Day 6 To Sedona

Day 7 Sedona

Day 8 Depart Sedona
