Where to stay? Willing to drive to the park

I have been reviewing various cabins and lodges for probably 2 weeks now on Tripdvisor and online and while there are many, I was hoping to find an option that is not as expensive. After our trip to the Great Smoky Mountains and staying in extremely affordable vacation rentals, there was a huge "sticker shock" when it came to lodging in the Teton area. Can anyone recommend a place to stay hotel/motel/cabin/vacation rental that might be more affordable? I am willing to make a long drive to the park if there was a less expensive place to stay. We would want to come in October 2014. This would be a 4,000 mile round trip for us so we are planning way ahead of time. Thanks!

I can tell you after visiting the Great Smoky Mts. NP many, many, many times and also visiting the Grand Tetons and Jackson Hole that you will not find many cabins and condos or hotels that will be affordable compared to areas around the GSMNP. There are some in park lodging that is nice and affordable imo compared to some of the hotels, etc. in Jackson Hole.

We have paid $85 per night for hotel rooms in Townsend, TN near GSMNP and paid as much as $325 per night for hotel rooms in Jackson Hole.

Check out lodging at Signal Mountain or Colter Bay.

Also if coming 4,000 miles then I would think about coming in September and not October. You may encounter winter weather and road closures at this time of the year. Also many of the park facilities will be closed.

Have you checked lodging in and around YNP? If you shift your focus away from Jackson, you may find some lower rates. West Yellowstone and Gardiner are gateway towns that may suit your needs a little better. Just remember that this is a high-volume tourist area, with a short season and limited number of rooms. All of these factors contribute to the prices you are seeing, especially in Jackson, which is viewed as a more "upscale" town.

You also should check the facility closing dates for the parks, as things do start to close down after Labor Day: www.nps.gov/yell and www.nps.gov/grte

If you do not mind sharing a bathroom and staying in less than luxury (think college dorm room) - there are some very inexpensive rooms at colter bay.

If you want a few nights in Jackson, look into the Miller Park Lodge (check out their tripadvisor reviews). It is an older motel right in town but super clean & nice. Very affordable for Jackson accommodations. You can walk to restaurants & stores & the town square. It was the cheapest place we stayed in our week visiting the parks & it was the nicest!

Check in Teton Village. There are a variety of accomodations - hotel rooms, condos, house rentals. We booked through Jackson Hole Resort Lodging. Teton Village is very close to one of the entrances into Grand Teton National Park.
