Motorcycling in the Smokys

We will be taking a 5 day motorcycle trip to the Smoky Mountains in July and was wondering if anyone could give us some tips on some good rides to take through the mountains and any other rides in the area that would be scenic and fun! We are real history buffs, too, if that helps!

Many Thanks!

The #1 road in the area for bikers seems to be the Tail of the Dragon, which is Hwy 129 on the southwest side of the national park.

In the national park, I can suggest all the main areas like Cades Cove (very low speed however), Roaring Fork, Newfound Gap Road, Clingmans Dome, etc.

If you want more "back country" type areas, try the Cataloochee and Balsom Mtn areas.

There is Cherohala Skyway, Blue Ridge Parkway and the Foothills Parkway. Great riding roads!

I might add that -- while it's certainly a beautiful drive -- the bikers love the Tail of the Dragon (129) a little too much. If you go on the weekend, especially in July, the traffic will ruin your ride. The foothills parkway can be as trafficky, but mostly just the sections surrounding the Pigeon Forge("hell amid paradise" is their city slogan)/Gatlinburg area.

Winding Stairs and US 64 between Franklin NC and Murphy, you honestly should avoid Cades Cove on a motorcycle in July unless you enjoy hanging out in bumper to bumper traffic at a crawl.

Top rides in the Smokies are The Blue Ridge Parkway, Tail of the Dragon ( prior to the Tail NC 28 from Franklin to Fontana Village is also a curvey path as well) Cherohala Skyway, Foothills Pakrway and perhaps US 64 from Highlands to Murphy. These would be touring roads with not a lot of traffic
