Visiting April 17th-24th 2011 with two 12 yr old boys

We will be coming to Gatlinburg for my sons spring break from school. We know of all the fun activities to do on the strips in GB and PF but are there other things we can get into that 12yr old boys might enjoy? We love to take walks and hike. We aren't hardcore hikers for sure. Can anyone suggest some light hikes that will be rewarding as far as nature and scenic views? We want to visit Cades cove. Are bear out this time of year? Any other scenic roads we should travel? PLease let us know of anything some of you enjoy doing or have done that we might enjoy. We are looking for something to get us off the strips for a few days. We like the strips but we also want to enjoy the beautiful Smoky Mountains! We are staying at the Wyndham Resort in Sevierville. I look forward to all of your responses and I appreciate you replying to something that is probably asked 1000 times. Thank you!

A hike to Laurel Falls sounds like it would be good for you/them. Beautiful falls and its a paved trail (from what I remember of it) its also a popular trail and the parking lot is not that big so I would go early. Cades Cove has lots of trails and a person could spend 1/2 a day or better in there. Another trail would be to Clingmans Dome. Have you done the Roaring Forks Motor trail? Its just outside of Gatlinburg. This is where we spotted a bear right on the road. I believe bears should be out & about. Best time to see them would be late evening in Cades Cove. First time we ever went to Cades Cove we saw a mama bear and 2 cubs right on the side of the road! Needless to say I didn't have my camera with me!!

If the boys like to fish then there is plenty of places in the area to go Trout fishing at and no license if under 13yrs old needed.Dollywood is another hit with kids.Bluff Mountain Adventures offers 4 wheeler and Rhino riding tours which all boys love to do.The Bears should be out in full force in late April.I also recommend Ober Gatlinburg they have ice skating, chair lift and alpine slide and a few other things for kids up there to do all of it is alot of fun to do.There is also a few places that offer horse back riding.Laurel Falls is a nice hike to do.Cataloochee also has a auto tour like Cades Cove but a bit smaller and a good chance of seeing Bears and the Elk.Im sure you know that Pigeon Forge has a ton of Go Karts and Mini golf places. You could also drive some on the Blue Ridge Pkwy it is a beautiful drive. There is also WonderWorks and The Ripleys Aquarium which is another big hit.Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail,Clingmans Dome,Newfound Gap are good places to visit.

We are coming up in mid April and we plan on doing some of these things too. Also check in at the Vistors center to get booklets filled with coupons.Hope you and your family have a wonderful trip and a good time in the area.

You may already know of this.... maybe Ober Gatlinburg? It has a year around indoor ice skating rink and a great chair lift with Alpine Slide to the bottom. 12 yr old boys would enjoy.

I think seeing elk in Cataloochee for the first time is impressive and if your boys are anything like mine, they will enjoy this. Come March the new Oconoluftnee Visitor Center and Cherokee/Appalachain Museum should be open. It should be worth the trip to the new visitor center and if it is warm out try white water rafting either in TN/NC sides of the park.

Take a day trip to Franklin North Carolina to one of the gem mines there looking for rubies and saphires.
