One afternoon in the park

We have maybe 3 or 4 hours in Cherokee before we attend a show at Harrah's. We would like to do a short auto tour in the park. Can do some easy hiking, but one of us has a new knee, so nothing strenuous! How far is the park from the casino? Suggestions for which auto tour?

We also may be giving someone else a brief tour.....maybe an hour or 2....suggestions for that as well?

THANKS!

Cherokee, and the Casino, are within minutes of the park. The issue is, when are you going to be there? October is peak fall color time and the traffic on weekends can be very heavy. You might spend all your available time sitting in a line of cars.

Frankly, you have so little time that a drive on the Cherokee-Gatlinburg road to Newfound Gap and back is about all you can do. Make a short stop at Oconaluftee Visitors Center and another at Newfound Gap overlook.

We will be there on a Saturday, Columbus Day weekend. Never thought about traffic. That is a good point. Maybe we will enjoy the scenery as we drive from Cherokee, other than the casino. We are not gamblers. Do not want to sit in a line of traffic. Other ideas?

If scenery is your prime objective take the Blue Ridge Parkway toward Ashville, go as far as you wish, then turn back to Cherokee. The traffic on the BRP will move better than on the Gatlinburg-Cherokee Road.

If you want something cultural go to the Museum of the Cherokee Nation in Cherokee--authentic story of the Eastern Band of Cherokee.
