Where should we go to fish?

My husband and I are planning a trip to Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg Memorial Day weekend this year. He loves to fish and I am only a beginner. We don't want to pay $200 for a fishing guide or experience. Can you recommened places in the park for bass fishing?

Thanks!

There is no bass fishing in the national park. However there is excellant trout fishing. Try the Little River for trout fishing. There is good bass fishing in the Little River outside the park below Townsend. There is excellant bass fishing in the West Prong of the Pigeon River between Pigeon Forge and Sevierville.

Thank you for the suggestions, these really help! We don't have fly fishing gear. Do you think this will matter?

You will be fine. Just read the regulations. They are not the same as out of the park. Downtown Gatlinburg also has great trout fishing in the river that runs through town. It has its own set of rules too.

TN wildlife ageny has a regular rainbow trout stocking program Mar - Oct in many of the streams and rivers in TN including those around Gatlinburg. The fish in the Park streams are generally wary - without a guide, your time would be better spent fishing a a stocked stream outside the Park such as in Gatlinburg. Corn, fish eggs, power bait, 1/8 oz rooster tails, small spinners on light tackle - 4lb line are used frequently. www.tennessee.gov/twra/fishlicense.html

Be aware...you can not fish in Gatlinburg on Thursdays. They used to stock the river with trout on that day. My husband always has the best luck on Friday mornings with live worms. You can go to Ace Hardware and get your fishing permits and regulations for both G'burg and Sevier County. Good luck!

If you can take the time, and would like a breathtakingly scenic drive, go through the park and over to the NC side. Plenty of good trout fishing in and around Cherokee NC. Both stream and pond fishing, you'll need a license from the local tribe.
