Chain of Craters Road or Kilauea Iki Trail

Will be on cruise ship with one day in Hilo. We have hired a car to go to VNP for the day. Should we take the Chain of Craters Rd or walk the Kilauea Iki Trail? The ship is in port from 8am to 6pm but we have to take a shuttle from the port to the airport to pick up car so our time is limited.

I would try to do both. The Chain of Craters drive doesn't have that many stops, now that Halema'uma"u crater is active and the volcanic fumes can cover a fair amount of the drive. If you have time, it is certainly worth driving to at least the lookout to see how the lava flows have expanded down the pali (cliffside) and created new land next to the ocean. The petroglyph field is also worth it, if the air conditions and time allow.

Thanks to all. We will get a map, do the walk and then drive Chain of Craters as far as time permits

There's a box with the guidebooks as well at the beginning of the trail. It's on the honor system.

The park system is in dire need of funds, so any contributions to the park will be put to good use.
