Try the Best Western in Chester. Very dependable, nice motel, and much closer to the park than Red Bluff. Drakesbad and Juniper Lake in the park are just north of Chester, and the southwest entrance is only a half-hour away. Cooler temps than Red Bluff, too, and you'll spend a lot less time driving to the attractions in the park.

For Lassen we stayed at the Grace Lake cabins in Shingletown. No real town there just a small grocery store/ gas station.Small restored 1 bed cabins.BBQ grill outside for cooking no stove but microwave & mini fridge

Sat outside- 2 chairs & picnic table- & enjoyed the outdoors, some road noise from the highway.

This is more off the beaten path on Highway 44 coming in from Redding.

I suggest Grace lake Resort cabins in Shingletown. Just stayed there over Labor Day. Nice clean cabins and close to park. Forget Chester. Bring your own food!

We stayed in a cabin at the Mill Creek Resort. Very clean and comfortable. They have a restaurant that serves food until 5:30 p.m. and have excellent hamburgers and milkshakes and microbrews on tap. The resort is 20 minutes from Lassen which is about the same distance as the Mineral Lodge. It is rustic (no TV and limited to no cell phone coverage).

Since Mount Lassen is mountain country, to stay in that mode avoid Red Bluff and as mentioned above stay at Chester or Mill Creek. Chester is larger of the two and is closer to the Lake Almanor area - a pretty lake in the area.

i.e. everyone has given you good advice already.
