Hi Vida V. You didn't specify what type of lodging you prefer i.e. camping, motel/hotel, lodge, condo, etc. Labor Day is a busy weekend for RMNP also so you may have a little trouble finding a place at this late date. Are you planning to stay in the Estes Park area?

As for not to miss things I would suggest definitely taking the drive up Trail Ridge to at least the Alpine Visitors Center but possibly all the way to the west entrance at Grand Lake. The drive is amazing with great views and changing scenery around every curve. You should definitely see elk and possibly rocky mountain sheep (visit the Sheeps Lake area) and moose on the west side. There are also many hiking opportunities in the park from easy walks to strenuous hikes. Some not to miss hikes include Bear Lake and Sprague Lake which are easy. The Moraine Park area is usually full of elk and is beautiful also. Enjoy your trip.

Most of the best hiking is accessible inside the park, so you can really stay anywhere in Estes and have a short drive into the park.

I really like staying at The Woodlands for a nice condo setting. If you'd like a cabin, Solitude Cabins are very nice. Marys Lake Lodge, The Stanley and the Black Canyon Inn are also nice and all have restaurants on site.

If you're looking for a hotel room or a cabin, the YMCA of the Rockies is great! Located 3 or 4 miles out of Estes Park with beautiful views. Pool, tennis courts, cafe, cafeteria, etc.

We just stayed a week in July. We stayed the whole week at Castle Mountain Lodge, it's only 2 miles to the entrance to RMNP. We stayed in River Castle 6 which is a stand-along cabin, with a fully furnished kitchen, it had everything we needed. The Fall River flows in front of their property, it was wonderful. The staff is helpful and not intrusive, it was quiet and private. Hummingbirds feeders on every patio. Close to downtown Estes Park to dine at night or shop. Even though the mountains are beautiful don't overlook the meadows or "parks" as they are called. Be sure to go to Moraine Park and walk along the meandering river, it is breath-taking. Trail Ridge road is a scenic drive, be sure to drive it early, less cars. The tundra is a wonderous place to see.
