Driving in Sequoia National Park in mid March

Hi,

We are planning a trip from Yosemite (Fish Camp) to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park in mid March. Can anyone provide information regarding typical road conditions in that area in March? Would we need chains if we stay in Giant Forest Village?

Always carry chains in the Mountains that time of year. Only Mother Nature knows if you will need them. Worst case you could get stuck without them as when they say chains you can not drive without them.

Hello BobandLisa,

I agree with the last post. It's always a good idea to carry chains while driving in the mountains during the winter months. Even if you don't need them going in, there could be a huge snowstorm that night and you might need them to get home. Plus the National Park Service will sometimes screen all vehicles headed into the park and ask drivers to show that they have chains with them. If you don't have the chains they might not let you in.

Also worth noting is that Highway 180 is typically closed between Kings Canyon and Sequoia during the winter months. You may be able to get a little ways into Kings Canyon on the 180, but probably not all the way into the heart of the park. If you plan on visiting Sequoia, the best way to go would be to take 41 south to 99 south to Visalia and then take 198 into the park.

Thank you both for your help and information. We will make sure that we have chains before we go.

Try checking out Montecito Lake Resort at the north end. The road is open to there. A nice grove of giant sequoias is a reasonable distance ... the Grant Grove. The General Grant tree is a mature tree that has not lost the top portion like most 2,000 year old tress have.
