skyline drive afternoon

hi,

will be on skyline drive next week and just have a few hours in the afternoon to explore (probably until sunset I would think). any suggestions of what areas to concentrate on? we can basically do any part, as we will be traveling from hot springs to lancaster pa. we are not big hikers but a little exploration of wildlife/waterfalls/nice views would do.

thanks!!

Skyline Drive is beautiful and you'll enjoy the scenery from the overlooks. Check out www.nps.gov/shen folllow links to hiking and look for hikes rated easy or moderate, the ones on the website are the most popular hikes. Little Stony Man is accessed easily on SD and after a short (uphill but not that bad) hike, you get a wonderful panoramic view. When you arrive, stop in the visitors center and ask about hikes and other activities based on your time, interests and abilities. Happy trails.

Skyline Drive is 105 miles, from mile marker 105 at the south entrance (Rockfish Gap) to mile marker 1 at the northern entrance (Front Royal). The day you will be on the Drive, will you spend that night in Lancaster, PA? I prefer the central/northern park of Skyline Drive from around Big Meadows (mile marker 51) to around Thornton Gap (which is also an exit from the Drive to the east or west). It seems to me that there are more pull offs, access to waterfalls and the two main overnight stays (Big Medows Lodge and Skyland Resort). Yes the Stony Man Nature Trail is a nice hike that is not too steep; you can get a trail map st the start and stop at various points to read about stuff. Last year (July)on this walk, we saw a young black bear foraging in the woods. Plus we saw two more around Big Meadows Lodge and one in our campground in August. And Stony Man is very near Skyland Resort, White Oak Canyon and the easy Limberlost walk which is on a man-made walkway.

If you drive up to Front Royal, you will be near Interstate 66 and not too far from Interstate 81.
