Are wetsuits required to hike the Narrows in early July?

Hi all,

I just want to check that one out... Here in northern Canada, river water is cold/cool all summer long. Cool enough to be cold after 30 minutes of walking in it... What about the water leading to The Narrows? Will be it warm in early July (75F+) or cool (66F-70F)?

Also, what about water level? Should we expect 3feet+ or walking in puddles?

Many thanks!

Water temperature doesn't change too much from somewhere in the 60s. It isn't so much water temperature that matters in July as it is air temperature. When it is over 90 degrees that 60 degree water feels very nice.

No wetsuits are not needed.

However, if since your feet will be in the water most of the time if you have some neoprene socks you will be more comfortable.

Great thanks!

We intend to rent water shoes from some place (got the info somewhere in my folder...)

How about water level? What should we be expecting?

Water level is variable, as the potential for rain can push up water levels and flow rate to the point where the Narrows hike will close. In July the water flow can be in the 40-50 cfs area, and the water level will be quite low, and it will not likely get any lower.

Check out this website from time to time if you want to get average statistics and get a feel for what to expect

In July, it has been reported that you will see 'all types' hiking in the river, from bare feet to wetsuits and the 'Narrows Package' that is available for rent at several outfitters in the summer months.

Water levels will range(depending on where you are in the Narrows)from dry ground to waist high, with calf to knee high being the norm. There are also deep pockets where you can swim, but these are somewhat avoidable, but then again, it also depends on the water level and flow at the time. Because of the current and the slippery and uneven bottom, do not discount taking an accidental tumble into the river
