Camping in Zion National

Some friends and I are looking for great camping in Zion. We are all college kids and would prefer to not be surrounded by families/RV's. We would like something more secluded/off the beaten path and we are perfectly ok with hiking to get there. Although it would be nice to be able to have a fire...and proximity to hiking/river/waterfalls/other things to do would be ideal. Ideas?

There are three official campgrounds in Zions. Watchman and South are both at or near the entrance gate and will be full of RV's and families.

The other one is Lava Point. It is a long way from the main canyon up the Kolob Terrace Road. Its six sites are first come first served and so it is a long way to go if they are already taken .

Any other camping in the back country to which you would hike will be by permit. They offer those up 4 months out for about half, the other half are available as walk in permits. However usually due to fire control issues no campfires are allowed in the back county, and often are even restricted in the main campgrounds in the heat of the summer.

The Top down Narrows pretty much will be the best waterfalls and river, though is popular so the campsites do tend to be hard to come by.

If you stay are able to get permits for the Subway non technical hike Lava Point would be a good campground to use as a base.

As said, if you want to do some quiet camping in the park, then you will need to familiarize yourself with the wilderness guide for Zion. Then after obviously score the necessary permit for the backcountry trails that have the established campgrounds. >> nps.gov/zion/…ZionWG2014.pdf

There are assorted BLM parcels of land intermixed with private land on the outside of Zion Park. The more convenient areas and previously established BLM campspots have been restricted and shut down in recent years. There is no online info that is recent that lists where the current areas for BLM campspots are.
