fall vacation Blue Ridge Mts. area ideas?

Our 30th. anniversary is next year and would like to plan a fall vacation including the turning of the fall leaves in or around the Blue Ridge Mountains.

We're in our late 60's so we're not into canoeing or hiking or anything too strenuous. We're driving from South Louisiana and anything along the way would also be helpful. Got a lot of information online but would also like to get personal ideas from anyone who has vacationed or lived in this area.

Lots of choices, any of which would provided an outstanding vacation. If you haven't already, you might consider:

Blowing Rock/Boone

Highlands/Cashiers

Dillsboro/Bryson City/Sylva

Waynesville/Maggie Valley

...and of course, Asheville

In all of these areas you can find rental properties tucked way back in the mountains, B&B's and hotels right in town, or more conventional chain hotels. They all offer lots of activities and sights within reasonable driving distance.

Driving the Blue Ridge Parkway is always a popular fall activity, so you might consider taking a day or two to do that.

Google some or all of the above, and let us know what other questions you may have.

One more thing...better book early!

Maybe I can offer a few suggestions. The Blowing Rock are is charming, offers beautiful views, interesting shopping, crafts and friendly people. You can walk the small town, sit by the side of a lake or find a bench in the park and just sit, with an ice cream cone and people watch. The following suggestion may help you decide.

Driving from Louisiana, you may find that Chattanooga, Tennessee, is a good stopping point. You may want to stay a few days and see all that our city has to offer you also.

The largest operating railroad museum in the state.

2) Coolidge Park. This beautiful park features the antique carousel that has been restored and your child has a choice of 52 beautiful carved animals to ride. Docked on the Tennessee River at the park is the Delta Queen that is now a hotel.

Along the river on the south shore is the Riverwalk, that follows the Tennessee with beautiful scenery and interesting sights along the way. Walk across the Walnut Street Pedestrian Bridge from the South Shore to the North Shore. www.chattanooga.gov/prac/30_1095.htm
