Blue ridge parkway drive

Hi, we'll be travelling from Indiana to see fall colors from 19th October through 23rd. Can anyone please suggest which route to take. Also recomend hotel/hotels on the way if possible. We can stay in any of the intercontinental (holiday inn hotel along the way) and can also change hotels. Just want to soak in the mountains! Thanks.

Hi 4aned,

Can you please clarify...are you asking about route/hotels for the trip from Indiana, or after you get to NC and the Parkway?

Regardless, I can tell you that hotel rooms will be difficult to find. This is one of the busiest travel months of the year for the mountains, so you definitely need reservations (and you're already too late for the most convenient/popular places).

I agree with arbyunc. This has been peak week and SO many people. It has been a beautiful leaf color season and you will just need to do your best along the way. Good luck!

It's after we get to NC. We just wanted to know where to drive/stay for best fall experience. Hotels are not a problem for us. We can get any holiday inn hotel anytime, even it's last minute. Thanks.

^ So how do you get a room any time if there's no vacancy? I'd like to know that trick!

Most holiday inns have a couple rooms open for intercontinental owner's association which we are members.

Thanks for the reply--I didn't know that. So all Holiday Inns give up a couple of rooms worth of revenue at all times? Wow.

Anyway, to address your original question, I think most people would agree that the best parts of the BRP are from Boone, NC southward through Asheville to Cherokee. So you could start at either end of this stretch. I know there are Holiday Inns in Asheville, Boone, and Cherokee, so you should have no problem there. IF you drove without stopping, it's maybe a 2.5 hour drive from Boone to Asheville, but you'll definitely want to plan on some stops along the way. I'd plan at least half a day, and perhaps a full day for that stretch. Same for the Asheville to Cherokee stretch.

Good luck!

Thanks so much! As far as that holiday inn program, its optional for owners. I know most owners do it anyways. It may not be couple rooms, it could be just one room per night. We do pay an annual fee for this and also have to leave a room open at our hotel for this purpose.

You also asked about the route from Indiana to Asheville. The fastest is follw the interstates to Knoxville then I-81 N to I-40 east to Asheville . If you have plenty of daylight left and want to wander to see fall color, etc. you can take two different scenic routes as the kllast leg of your trip: 1) get off I-81 at Dandridge TN, head to and through Gatlinburg,TN on US 441 through GSMNP up and over Newfound Gap into North Carolina to Cherokee,NC , then head NE on US 19/23 to Asheville...will add 2 hours minimum to your trip. 2) get off I-40 at Newport TN and follow US 25E along the French Broad River to Hot Springs, NC . Marshall,NC >Asheville. Will add 30 minutes to your trip. The former route takes you into Great Smokies Nat'l Park and to a high elevation and amazing long range view at Newfound Gap.. The latter route follows the river through a beautiful valley to Hot Springs then climbs up and away from the river gorge. Both are lane roads with areas of twisties.

PS I'll likely pass you mid-way, as I am going to a wedding in Indy Oct 22.
