Oregon Coast Itinerary

Hi, I am nearly there with our itinerary from Vancouver to San Francisco in September, just the Oregon Coast remaining to plan for which I am thinking 5 days as follows:

2 nights Cannon Beach - the first day driving from Seattle and the 2nd day exploring the area (Ecola State Park, Haystack Rock)

Morning drive to Yachats (seeing Cape Perpetua, sea lion caves)

Morning drive stopping along the way (Dunes, Cape Blanco) and spend night Gold Beach

Spend time in Gold Beach and then drive to spend night in Crescent City ( location only for heading into the redwoods the following day)

Happy to hear any thoughts on whether this sounds like a good plan or whether it would be worth spending 2 nights somewhere else rather than Cannon Beach? Or spend one night in Cannon Beach and then add another stop? We love photography, hiking, lighthouses so welcome any suggestions.

Cape Perpetua and Sea Lion Caves south of Yachats. Might be better to see them as you leave Yachats. Plenty of good stops between CB and Yachats. you can spend most of a day in Newport. Depoe Bay good stop, so is Tillamook Cheese Factory

Consider night in Bandon rather than Gold Beach. GB is quite close to Crescent City. And Bandon better stop in my view.

The lighthouses are south of Cannon Beach, with one offshore exception. Some are open for tours although they may have limited hours:

I also think Bandon would be a better stop.

Crescent City is an okay town as long as you realize it is not a picturesque yuppie upscale town - it's an old fishing and logging town that was rebuilt after the disastrous 1964 earthquake and flood. The bulk of the architecture is (unfortunately) straight out of 1964.

Don't miss the unique Battery Point lighthouse!

From Cannon Beach, you can visit Astoria (lots to do and see there) , as well as Cape Disappointment in SW Washington (Lewis & Clark). You also might like "historic" Hug Point - okay it does not compare to anything from ancient Roman times but is interesting :-)

Near Cannon Beach check out Oswald West State Park. Take the walk back to beautiful Short Sands Beach. We will be going there in a couple of days... it's a great place for photography. Have fun! :).

thank you so much for the recommendations. Definitely think we will stay in Bandon rather than Gold Beach.

and thank you half-brit for the link on Lighthouses - this is perfect! Also we been looking for things to do around Cannon Beach so some really helpful information.

One more thing, the drive from Yachats to Bandon seems to have a lot of stuff to stop and see, Sea Lions, Cape Perpetua, dunes, Cape Blanco etc.... is one day sufficient to see all these things?

You're welcome :-)

Yes, if you drove straight through, Yachats to Bandon is only about 2, 2½ hours so you should have plenty of time to stop and see things.

You might like the elk viewing area a few miles inland from Reedsport:
