Recommendations north of Bar Harbor to Eastport or Calais

After a day+ visit during 1st week in October to Bar Harbor/Acadia, I'll be driving north to St. Johns, New Brunswick to catch the ferry to Nova Scotia. Any suggestions for lodging? eating? sites not to miss? other suggestions? Any idea of total drive time from Bar Harbor to St. Johns?

Bar Harbor to Saint John is approx 185 miles and just under 4 hrs drive time. Keep in mind that once you cross the border into New Brunswick the time will advance one hour to Atlantic time, from Eastern. Very important when keeping reservations! Also you will need your passport to re-enter the U.S. from Canada.

In early October the ferry to Nova Scotia will depart Saint John at noon. You are expected to be at the ferry terminal one hour before departure. Reservations are highly recommended.

We stay in Calais at the Greystone Bed and Breakfast. http://www.greystonecalaisme.com/ A wonderful place to stay. If Candace knows you are planning on catching the ferry in Saint John, she will serve a delicious breakfast at 0730, leaving you plenty of time to cross the border and head to Saint John. Drive time from Calais to Saint John is approximately 1 1/2 hrs. (remember to calculate the time change in!) There are a couple of motels in Calais but they leave a lot to be desired.

Not sure of your time limitations, but interesting sites on the way would include stopping at Lubec, Campobello, or Eastport and St. Andrews NB. As far as lodging, I would opt for St. Andrews as you would already be across the border and it would be one less hassle to deal with in the morning. The only place I am familiar with is the Algonquin, which is an experience into itself.

As you will be coming in October most seasonal places will already be closed and you'll have all the same great options the locals get!

The Pickled Herring in Eastport is a nice place to eat, and if you are driving through Machias on your way Downeast, check out the Pie At Helen's.

If you are driving through Eastport, look up Raye's Mustard... Best mustard there is.

If you have the time...check out the 45th Parallel in Perry! The BEST eclectic gifts from around the world- the owner is very personable and the prices are reasonable. It is 20 mins +- from Calais and very worth the stop. A best kept secret!

More time? Park your car on the side of the road at Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge and marvel at the eagle pairs nesting. Approx. 30 mins N

Still not enchanted? How about the Cobscook Reversing Falls about 1/2 hour away?Approx 30 mins S.
