Greetings from Arizona! My family of 4 (kids will be 6 and 10) will be visiting Maine for the first time in July. I have rented a cottage near Belfast and was hoping to get some input on my very rough itinerary. I really want to see as much of mid-coast Maine as possible, so this is what I'm thinking in terms of day trips:
Day 2: explore Belfast, Searsport, and Bucksport. Go to Penobscot Observatory and Ft. Knox State Park.
Days 4 and 5: Acadia National Park (I've booked a hotel in Bar Harbor in order to maximize time at the park and minimize driving).
Day 7: visit Boothbay Harbor.
Day 8: drive back to Boston and fly home.
I know it sounds like I'm really packing it in, but my kids are used to traveling this way and I really want to see as much as possible. My biggest question is this: have I clustered the places I want to visit in a logical manner? Am I being too ambitious? We really want to do a good amount of hiking and maybe a little biking. We also love things like factory tours, visiting working farms, and botanical gardens. And of course, we love to eat local food.
Any and all input highly appreciated!
