Sailing trip around San Juan Islands & Kayaking company?

Hi (again). An experience we'd love to have is to sail and take in the islands by water. Are there any captained companies on San Juan that do this? We are a group of 8 (of which 4 are children) staying near Roche Harbour in early August, a half day trip would be a maximum.

We'd also like to try kayaking. Is this safe as beginners with children? Is so - any recommendations. Again, max half a day somewhere peaceful and safe.

MANY thanks

There is a state ferry to get to the islands.

there are boats that take you out whale watching.

Unsure if any of them are chartered sailboats.

Here's a page listing several sailing charters. I think it's best if you review some and decided which, if any, meets your needs. http://tinyurl.com/ns3js23

Kayaking? These are very cold ocean waters with significant, at times, tidal currents. I'd not do this. Besides, I don't think that kayak companies on SJI will rent to solo kayakers, but will take guided groups.

Here's a page listing kayak companies. Ditto my comments above. If they'll take your group, they'd want to know the kids' ages.

Had you considered whale watch charters? Some might provide cruising among the islands.

This will be, as you wished for in your other string, a fabulous trip for adults and for the kids. I've added the phrase "A Must See" at several places.

San Juan Island

San Juan is the most popular island for tourism, but that does not translate into crowds, as the ferry capacity is limited and folks disperse among the island's many sights. Friday Harbor is the major activity center for the island, which has a year-round population of approximately 7,500 people. SJI has far more access to shoreline than the other islands.

Things to Do and to See on San Juan Island

Alpaca farm/ranch & Store- Alpaca Ranch with lots of cute alpacas, on road to, and near, Roche Harbor. Alpaca products. Parking area, one for the store, one to see the alpacas. A Must See.

Beachcombing

Biking/Bike Rentals/Mopeds/2-person Scooters

Bird Watching

County Fair in August

SJI County Park in small bay, west side, north of Lime Kiln Point, great for walking, camping and sunset watching. A Must See.

Farmer's Market (seasonal)

Friday Harbor ("major") town; marina, lodging, charters, dining, Whale Museum, galleries (e.g., Waterworks), air strip) A Must See.

Golfing

Hiking --- http://www.thesanjuans.com/Hiking%20i...

Artist studios around the island

Pelindaba Lavender Farm (and their shop in Friday Harbor)

Lime Kiln Point State Park: A Must See. A lighthouse built in 1919, tours to the top a couple of days during the week in the summer (usually Thursday and Saturday) Great place to watch whales, porpoises, other sea life, or watch people watching for whales. Bring a picnic. To see Orcas, check with the Whale Museum, Friday Harbor Labs (UW Oceanographic facilities), as to the whale migration and tracks. Watch for tour boats on west side of island as indicators of whale sightings. See whales also from South Beach; go to low hill at north end of beach.

National Historic Parks, 2 - American Camp & English Camp (www.nps.gov/sajh/) A Must See.

Zip Line Tours

American Camp A Must See. Dramatic rocky and sandy beaches below bluffs. Many trails. See also South Beach - take Pickett's Lane road west to beach. Look for rabbits, red foxes (in a variety of colors) and raptors. Many sea birds including the beautiful Harlequin Ducks. Further south, at Cattle Point, see the lighthouse by walking the trail to the bluff and on. See Eagle's nest, possibly nesting eagles, above road, just before Visitor Center parking lot.

English Camp A Must See. From parking lot, walk trails to parade grounds and along shore. Find the Osprey nest at English Camp (with the bay behind you, look at the top of a pole shaped tree). Hike to the top of Mount Young for great views.

Roche Harbor (Hotel de Haro, lodging, dining, marina, gardens, mausoleum, air strip)

You'll find an extensive list of companies that do that here in the San Juans at this link: www.visitsanjuans.com/what-to-do/boating The ones there that I have had personal experience with to a limited extent are Friday Harbor Marine & Yachts and Schooners North both of which do a very good job at their specialties, see the web site link for more info on them and their own web sites.

As for kayaking over n the Roche Harbor area San Juan Outfitters is located there and in the past I have often gone out on their 3 hour trips and most of the time families with children are among the groups that go out daily. On many of these trips people have brought children and sometimes ones as young as 6...I believe then they use a triple kayak with the child in the middle and 2 adults. They depart from a dock so no hauling kayaks or having to wade into the water to launch them. They have a web site at sanjuanislandoutfitters.com/kayaking_daytrip… There may well be other kayak companies here that can handle taking young children but I don't myself have experience with them. You will find a list with contact info for the kayak companies on the island at visitsanjuans.com/what-to-do/san-juan-island…

BTW as you will be staying over at Roche Harbor you said Roche Harbor has a nice marina (with more large yachts in the summer than Friday Harbor marina gets) as well as a few restaurants. In the summer it additionally has a small outdoor grouping of artist booths selling locally made art. Very nearby Roche Harbor resort is the outdoor Sculpture Garden at Westcott Bay where one can leisurely stroll around and view the many sculptures or just sit and look at the birds on the pond there. For more info on that see wta.org/go-hiking/hikes/westcott-bay-nature-…

Thank you all for the advice. We had a wonderful time on San Juan Island and did much of that suggested. We chartered a 4 hour cruise aboard the Dirigo II. Could not complement the crew or the experience highly enough.

Extremely professional and knowledgable, fun and attentive. Our children were as involved as they wanted to be and the whole experience was a highlight to our trip www.sanjuanclassicdaysailing.com/dirigo-ii/.

4th July Beach was a favorite spot as was Lime Kiln Point. There is something extremely soothing about that spot!
