Hi,

I can not comment on any hotels but as to resorts:

Knokke is very upmarket and smart;

De Haan is also a nice resort.

If you want a Southend/Margate, bucket and spade atmosphere, go for Ostend, although its one of the poorest towns in Flemish Belgium and a little bit on the rough side.

I would agree with NWKent and recommend De Haan as a low key but pleasant place, which hasn't been ruined by 1960's concrete architecture, unlike most of the Belgian Coast. De Haan is the upmarket resort for the Belgian elite, although I personally don't think its a particularly attractive place.

For me Blankenberge = Margate (From my childhood)

Very bucket and spade. Very busy and popular in the summer. Fine if that is what you are looking for. Just behind the beach are high rise apartment blocks.

Belgian Coast is very crowded. Knokke is the most upmarket. You could goto Northern France as well, it is less crowded there.

If you want to splash out, you can do the Kurhaus in Scheveningen (near The Hague), but expect huge crowds on the beach as well (when sunny)

just looked at the kurhaus, and i think this could be the diffeence between a very nice couple of days at the seaside and a really memorable extra special time.

i just need to make sure its not too far from calais.

many thanks

This is a group of hotels that have various levels, one of these may suit:

Manior du Dragon looks nice (not the Kurhaus level though)

There are various luxury hotels in Knokke, especially in Le Zoute quarter. For example Golf Hotel Zoute (golfhotelzoute.be/hotels-knokke-hotel/index.…), Manoir du Dragon (http://www.manoirdudragon.be/), Lugano Hotel (http://www.hotellugano.be/), Nelson's Hotel (http://www.nelsonshotel.be/).

Le Zoute itself is different from all the other coastal towns. No concrete or high-rise here, but whitewashed villa's amidst a lot of green.

I didn't know you were coming from Calais, in that case, The Hague is too far.

So if you really want to splash out, you should head to Deauville in Normandy.
