transportation from san jose airport

We are traveling in May and spending 4 nights in Chachaqua and then returning to San Jose for a day and a half before we fly back. Can we take a bus to Chachagua from San Jose and how much will it cost> or are we better off taking a taxi?

1. The SJO airport is not actually in San Jose, but in Alajuela.

2. Yes, you can get a bus.

Not far from the airport is a bus station known as "La Radial." Buses going north from San Jose stop here to pick up more passengers. You can just take a taxi from the airport and tell him "La Radial." It is a newish station and has a clean restroom, small mini-mart and security guard. No ticket office - you will pay the driver in colones. You can get colones from an ATM at the airport before you exit.

Look here: www.thebusschedule.com/cr/ for buses from San Jose to La Fortuna. They will all stop at La Radial. Look at the time the bus leaves San Jose and it will arrive at La Radial about 1/2 an hour later.

Note that on the bus schedule website, they use the name "Ciudad Quesada" which is the same town as San Carlos. You will need to changes buses in San Carlos.

You can also just look for any bus that says "San Carlos" on the front and then change for the bus to La Fortuna when you arrive in San Carlos.

Chachagua is on the way to La Fortuna so the bus should pass by the entrance. I don't know how far it is from the highway to the hotel -- you will have to contact them and ask about that. It's possible someone will meet you.

When you get on the bus in San Carlos, just tell the driver you want to get off at Chachagua. It couldn't hurt to walk up and remind him about 1/2 an hour into the bus ride.

It will cost less than $10 per person, probably, using the public bus.

You can also arrange a shared van shuttle from the airport to La Fortuna and get off at Chachagua. It might be on their "list of hotels" - not sure. The shared van shuttle is a 12-passenger, air conditioned van that provides hotel to hotel transfers with few stops. (Just to pick up or let off other passengers.) It's around $50-$60 per person.

Of course is a lot better by taxi...but a lot cheaper by public bus...

By taxi be sure you deal ONLY with orange color taxis from SJO...official taxis...the red ones or pirates even more expensive some times...and only God knows who you may end up dealing with...

Any idea how much it would cost? We plan to spend 4 days there and then one more full day in San Jose. Any suggestions on what to do or where to stay in San Jose?
