Nelson's Dock Yard and nearby beach

We have been to Antigua via cruise ship many times and for some reason with all the beaches available we have always ended up at Miller's. This year husband and son are golfing but the other couple we will be with have not been to Antigua ... I think they should see Nelson's and we would all like to spend a little time on a beach. We don't want to do the ship group tour waiting on people to figure out how to get on and off a bus. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

My suggestion would be that you get of the boat and find a taxi driver, there will be alot around as you get off. These taxi drivers are friendly and reliable guides.

Get a taxi accross to Nelsons Dockyard and have a good stroll around, now there are two choices.

Get back in the taxi an head to Pigeon Beach, 3 minutes and get the taxi tio drop you there. Pretty beach plenty of shade, no hotels close by so a locals beach, you can watch the yachts come in and out of Falmouth Harbour. There is a small restaurant called Bumpkins that sells drinks and snacks right on the water. There are no beach chairs so bring something to sit on under the palm trees.

Option 2. Tell the taxi that you are going to take the water taxi to Galleon Beach, this is 5 mins through the dockyard and a really pretty trip, Apple the water taxi man will drop you on the jetty at Galleon Beach. This beach has the Inn at English Harbour on it and some small cottages and larger villas up the hill. The beach is great and there are rocks to climb on and some snorkelling off the rocks, you can get beach chairs and there are two restaurants to choose from. The Inn has a beautiful but quite expensive rondevall restaurant with beautiful views or Calabash has a deck where you sit by the beach under palm trees, it also sells beers etc. Pam the cook at Calabash is a great chef, food is delicious and Michael the proprietor is an amusing sole.

Both Pigeon and Galleon are beaches not usually frequentd bu the cruise ship crowd.

After your beach stay get the driver to take you up to Shirley Heoghts where the view is great and you can take some areal photos of what you have just done.

Have fun

Also if you are fit you could hike one of the trails up to Shirley Heights from Galleon Beach!

Well you don't have to be TOO fit. Nobody would accuse me of that;-) Just take your time and bring some drinking water.

Allow an hour to climb Shirley Heights from Galleon, and about 25 minutes for the descent. Well worth the effort.

I second the Pigeon Beach recommendation - it was our favorite beach of the 10 we visited last week. Very quiet; good mix of sun, shade and calm beach; beach bar at the end for food & drinks...just lovely! Plus you have the added bonus of watching the amazing yachts come in & out of the harbor.

Alice did Lawrence take you to Pigeon Beach, do you remember? Was it an open-air "bus"?

He had a very nice van. We opted not to go to the beach, since the three year old would need to nap. I'm sure that you could talk with Lawrence and see what beach he uses.
