Aruba is pretty high rise, lots of casinos, very Americanised, with generally impeccable service and OK food.

Antigua is laid back, beaches, low rise buildings and proper Caribbean charm. Things happen slowly, but it's all part of chilling out.

Trying to compare the two is apples and oranges, I'm afraid.

mizgeorge, That is good information. I certainly do not mind Carribean charm. I am looking for nice staff with good service, great beach to walk with calm turquoise waters. Tranquility Bay at the Jolly Beach is where we have a time share opportunity. Any advice on this property?

I live inside the Jolly Harbour complex so I'm familiar with the area there, but not specifically Tranquility Bay. Judging by their pictures they share a beach with Jolly Beach Resort, the waters are blue and the sand is nice. They do have great sunsets and there are plenty of casual places for lunch and dinner nearby. As of this week, Java Jojo's is still closed, other than that the restaurants they have listed are accurate. There's also another Italian place, Al Porto, Peter's Steakhouse & Dogwatch Tavern inside the marina. The grocery will have most anything you need though if you're interested in cooking.

I totally agree with the other post that Antigua is slower and less modernized in general than some other caribbean islands. Service is hit or miss at most places in general. It is a nice place to forget about the rest of the world and relax if you're looking to slow down and enjoy the sun.

Within a few minutes drive there are several other good restaurants you can check out... Sugar Club & Carmichael's are both within the Sugar Ridge Resort across the street.

just before you would get to OJ's is Gibson's, also right on the beach.

Sharing the same side street Dennis has great bbq and Cocobay resort has just reopened their fine dining restaurant Sheer Rocks. Both have great cliffside views.

I have stayed in antigua's jolly beach hotel and i have also stayed at the riu palace hotel in aruba and the differences are;

Aruba:- more night life

: -hotels are nicer, much more grand

: better shows

: more hotels closer to each other, beach strech is longer

: great restaurants outside of the resorts

: more shopping variety for jellewry and brand name purses

Antigua; amazing excusions, lots of sight seeing

smaller, more intimite

spectacular scenery

jolly beach hotel was dated, needed updates

people are soooo kind, great service over all

very safe, you can go in town without any worries

Aruba and Antigua both have great food, beautiful beaches and kind people! No matter which one of these 2 locations you choose you will have a wonderful time!

I agree that they are very different islands. They are two of my favorites - the only ones that we would return to. Aruba is my favorite island. It's all-around easy to have a good time. There are tons of things to do, places to eat, etc. It's small, very manageable and the weather is almost always perfect. With that being said, it is not lush. With that weather comes the lack of rainfall and the lush landscape that you will find on Antigua. My last two trips to the Caribbean were Aruba and Antigua just last week. We honeymooned on Aruba many years ago and then went back with friends. It was great with our friends, but Antigua now has the edge for the romance. It's so beautiful and laid back. It felt like paradise.

it is all about your personality. i have done both. aruba is americanized with antigua having lots of brits. aruba is easier to drive with lots of signs compared to antigua. want to relax antigua. want noise and nightlife aruba.

me? if i want noisy americans i can stay home. don't get mad but vacations to me are about new people.

Aruba is more arid & flat, while Antigua is more hilly and green. IMO Antigua is much prettier & intimate feeling.

They both have upscale shopping ops, but Aruba's shopping is better.

Don't just limit your options to two islands. Check out other places as well!

I have been to both Islands twice..and agree with all the above posters..are you going with children? Aruba is guaranteed nice weather both times we were there we had absolutely no rain..If you stay on Palm Beach you can walk from one hotel to another...on the other had Antigua is the most beautiul Island I have seen..not as much to do..wont find a Wendy's on the Island..
