Antigua vs. Barbados

Which island should we visit in mid-Jan? Found availability using miles for these two Carribean islands. I've read mixed reviews of either islands. We're looking for a relaxing vacation for 4 days and are interested in snorkeling and good food. Also, we're useless NYCers, so we will not rent a car, unless absolutely needed. Please help!

NYC - You need to specify a budget and things like All Inclsuive or not as an option, big or small hotel etc.

I have been twice to both islands so may be able to help if I know what you want etc.

Stevenc, I don't want all inclusive since we don't really drink. We don't care much about the hotel size as long as it is nice and not too expensive. Thanks!

On Antigua, you might want to look at some of the lovely smaller properties rather than the big resorts.

You might consider

Antigua's not one of the top snorkelling destinations, but there are some nice spots around, or take a boat trip out to one of the good reefs. Since Antigua's a fairly small island, with great direct flights, it's a good choice for a short break as you don't have to spend half your vacation time travelling.

All the above have good dining options either on site or very nearby.

Again, you have to define "not too expensive" - that number is different for everybody.

Give us an idea, too, of what you mean by "nice". Some people think places like Motel 6 are "nice" others wouldn't think of staying anywhere other than something like a Four Seasons.

Contributors here would like to help but you have to give us something other than generalities to go on.

FYI - Antigua is not noted for great "off beach" snorkeling - even areas that you can reach by boat are only average when compared to snorkeling you find in places like the BVI's, Bonaire, Grand Cayman.

CaribSurfer, budget is around $250-300/night.

I understand that barbados and antigua are not known for snorkeling, but if I have to choose between the two, which island has the better snorkeling by boat?

Thanks!

We have been to both islands, most recently Antigua. For 4 days, you would be able to enjoy Antigua I think more than Barbados. We spent a week on both-- Barbados is beautiful, but big. We explored it by renting a car so we were able to cover alot of ground. We spent 4 actual days on Antigua and 2 days on Barbuda. We stayed at Sugar Ridge in Bolans. We did their B&B option which gave us the flexibility of dining out. They have shuttles to the local beaches and it is close to Jolly Harbour where you may find some snorkling charters. We did not do that, but enjoyed the local beaches very much. Sugar Ridge was a great place, though not directly on a beach, the views were nice.
