Antigua in late July

We have a group of 8 that is looking to spend July 26 to Aug 2 in Antigua. We are restricted to the summertime based on some childbirths in the group. We have found what looks to be a great house on the Southeast part of the island, but are concerned with some reviews that indicate that the island shuts down in the off season. Specifically, we want to make sure that we will be able to still find restaurants to eat in, etc. during this time. Very little experience with Antigua, so all advice welcome. Thanks.

Can you be more specific as to where you are intending to stay? Most places are closed in the summer, but if you are within striking distance of English Harbour, there may be some options.

Sure. The proposed house is located on the Southeast side of Freeman Bay on Galleon Beach, which is just down from English Harbour. Specifically, we just want to make sure that there will be a grocery store in the general vicinity, a bar or two, and perhaps a restaurant in which to get a meal. We are just down from Shirley Heights, so I believe that there is something up there for the Sunday night. We will be there 7/26 to 8/2. Thanks again!

It looks like tarheels has hijacked the post, and should be ignored.

Re the original question, Mizgeorge is I am sure the best person to respond. I haven't been to the area in the summer, but I imagine that the grocery store called Dockside Liquors in English Harbour will be open, and according to Antiguanice website, some of the restaurants appear to be open some nights - Cloggys, Trappas, Temo Sports maybe.

But, I doubt the area will be buzzing. Perhaps one of the local experts can advise more.

Personally I'd be more inclined to visit Dickenson Bay - Putters n Pepperz n Lime in walking distance, the new casino (Majestic) restaurant should be open as well. Not sure about coconut grove, but there would also be the options of La Bussola a bit further down the road, or Blue Pineapply the other direction, and places like Tradewinds a bit further up. There's also First Choice located a very short taxi ride away from Dickenson Bay.

I lived close to English Harbour for a whole year a while back and there is no getting way from the fact that the contrast between the winter and summer season is very marked. Perhaps 17 places to eat and drink at the height of the season dwindles to 1 or 2 BUT there is still a community living in and around there so you will not starve! A small store at Dockside Licquors at the edge of Falmouth Harbour and another Billy mart further round Falmouth will both sell staples but with very limited choice.. You would need a car to fetch anything heavy from either of these ( like large bottles of water) so you might as we'll take a trip up to the much larger Epicurian supermarket in Jolly Harbour (35 minutes each way). EH is so quiet because the whole economy revolves around the yachting industry and during the summer all the yachts disappear to the Mediterranean or East coast of US to avoid potential hurricane threat. Tip: if you are planning to eat out phone and check opening hours for that specific night - many restaurants are owner run and if business is looking particularly quiet they may not open every night, may close for the season early or on any night if there is no sign of guests by 7.00 they may just close early.

You might instead consider a villa in or near Jolly Harbour which has a more year-round tourist industry so you are guaranteed several bars ( some with entertainment ) and restaurants, the Epicurian supermarket and whilst still noticeably quieter than winter season it is rare that any of the businesses would be closed in July.
