Nelson's Dockyard

We will be stopping in St. Johns, Antigua via cruise ship in March and are looking for info on Nelson's Dockyard. Are there taxi's available to take us there and most importantly, taxis available to take us back to the ship? Is this an interesting historical location? Approx how long would it take to get there and any idea on the cost? Any info is appreciated!

Both going to and from Nelson's Dockyard there are plenty of cabs available. It should not take more than 15-20 minutes to get there. As to what the fare will be I can't say. When we were there we had booked a ride for the full day. Hopefully someone else can pitch in. Excellent restoration job on the buildings with many converted shops and small museums. There are many signs around so you can easily give yourself a self tour of the dockyard. It is worth the time to go to. You will not be disappointed.

Yes, definitely worth a visit, but allow longer for the journey. It should take around 40 minutes each way. From memory the entrance fee to the dockyard is around 8USD per person.

Lots to see in the Dockyard. When you're finished you can take the water taxi from the Dockyard over to Galleon Bay and do a bit of snorkelling for a few dollars or take a walk over to Pigeon Point.

There are also a number of restaurants in the area if you want something to eat. You can also take local bus transportation if you chose (no more than $2 US per person one way) and that is quite reliable. However, if you are relying on bus service, definitely give some extra time (at least half an hour) for the trip.

Thanks so much to everyone...very helpful! DTG0101, I saw you posted taxi fares to someone in a previous response on Antigua. From what I could tell, it looks like it would cost $24.00 US from the ship to Nelson's Dockyard. Does that sound about right to you?

If we were to take the water taxi over to Galleon bay to do some snorkeling, can we rent snorkel equipment there?
