Car/jeep hire

Hello

We're coming to Antigua for a week later this year and we're looking into car hire at the moment. Just wondered if anyone could advise whether a "normal" car would be ok, or if we woudl be better with a jeep of some sort? We were in St Lucia last year and the roads were terrible so we were very glad that we'd hired a jeep...but I wasn't sure if the same would be true on Antigua?

Thanks!

If you've been driving around the Uk after all the rain we had this winter - you'll have a pretty good idea of what the Antiguan roads are like - you have to play dodge the pothole!

We've had both a saloon car and a small jeep, and the driving experience was pretty hairy in both.

When you pick up the car, check any existing damage and the tyres carefully - and make sure that they haven't missed off any dents or scratches.... After that - just drive slowly

Actually the roads are better at the moment, elections round the corner, and filling the potholes paves the way to the voters hearts, or so it would appear!! We always rent a small 4 x 4 simply because it is more fun!

Used smallest economy cars and didn't have any problems. If there are more than 2 in your car some of the speed bumps may cause your car to bottom out a bit. They are marked on the road with white triangles in most areas. People are right, check for damage to the car and don't accept a car where the tires look poor. Some roads, like to Devils Bridge and Fort Barrington are not paved so the tires take a beating. Go slow and let the local trucks pass you by. Some rental places have small Suzuki jeep type cars that only cost a bit more. Book online ahead of your trip for savings.
