Question on Restaurants

My husband and I are going to Aruba, staying at the Bucuti hotel in June. I have heard ( and read some reviews) about the following restaurants that I wanted to try: El Gaucho, Flying Fishbone, Oldman and the Sea. They all sound great. Any problems lately with them? Do you know the cab fare from Bucuti?

Also, I heard about a very nice restaurant in the Lighthouse. Does anyone know the name and is it worth it?

Hi Noelle-

El Gaucho is excellent and the prices are reasonable.

On the Lighthouse restaurant I would stay away. Some people from our hotel got food poisioning from there when they went. There entire party of 8 people.

Cab fare from Bucuti to El Gaucho is probably around $8 each way.

Flying Fishbone and Old Man & the Sea are about a $50 to $60 round trip cab fare. These are best if you are renting a car.

If you would like a similar toes in the sand dining experience, then give Passions a try. It is located at Amsterdam Manor and is even walkable from Bucuti (if you don't mind the walk, too long for me).

Can anyone suggest restaurants close to Bucuti ( within ~ 10 each way cab fare) besides El Gaucho and Passions? I don't want to spend 50 on cab fares.

Restaurants within walking distance of Bucuti;

1. High end. Excellent food/service. Expensive.

LeDome and Screaming Eagle. About a 5 minute walk

after you pass Costa Linda. $125 - $200

2. Inexpensive.

Pizza Bob's. Adjacent to Bucuti parking lot.

$35 with a couple of beers and large pizza.

3. Moderate.

French Steakhouse next door at Manchebo and

Matthews at Casa del Mar next door to Manchebo

Maybe aroud $75.

Cab rides for around $10.

Madame Janette's. Probably the most popular place

in Aruba. Anyplace in the high rise area. Anyplace

I disagree with poster who said to stay away from the restaurant at the lighthouse. I highly recommend going there just before sunset. It is Beautiful. Do not order meat. Stick to pasta dishes.

Restaurant is called LaTrattoria. Taxi fare RT will be around $34. Worth it for one night. You could rent a car for $35/day.

As Tony suggested both Madame Janettes and the French Steakhouse have VERY good food in my opinion and a nice atmosphere

Just to offer another opinion on El Gaucho. We did not enjoy our meals there. It seemed quantity over quality, IMHO. I would substitute with the Sunset Grille at the Radisson Hotel. A little pricey, but the service and cuisine are first rate. Request outdoor seating. The filet at Madame Janette is also very good.

Another option for on-the-beach dining, and fairly close to Bucuti is Passions at Amsterdam Manor. Yet another option is Simply Fish at the Marriott Hotel. One of our favorites on the island.

We stayed at the Phoenix and used the bus to go to town, just $2.30 round trip p.p. We dined at El Gaucho and Driftwood, visited the Crystal Casino each trip using the bus system.

The one time we used a taxi was to dine at La Trattoria El Faro Blanco up by the California Lighthouse. The restaurant is a bit on the expensive side but the food is good and the views can't be beat. We arrived, camera in hand, just one half hour before sunset, got a couple fo nice photos and enjoyed a nice al-fresco dinner.
