Hi taminark - Which one of the Marriotts are you staying at? The resort, the Ocean Club or Surf Club. I can personally vouch for the resort and the Ocean Club which are both very nice. The Ocean Club is an all-suite resort (which we prefer) complete with a full kitchen, living/dining area, large bedroom(s). It's very lively down on Palm Beach (where the Marriotts are located) and great for people watchers. What else would you like to know; ask away and I'm sure we can help!

we are staying at marriot aruba resort and solaris casino. im not familiar enough to even know what to ask. Do we need a car. We usually go to st john and always get a car there because we go to a different beach everyday and stay at a villa. Whaat are some good restaurants fairly close by and do i need reservations for them?

Get a car, unless you want to wait for a bus and spend the same amount in taxis. You are at the far end of the high rise area.

Hi Tam,

I stayed at the Marriott Stellaris in April, and am going back in about a week and a half. You'll find lots of information in the hotel section of this board under the Marriott. I posted a pretty lengthy review a few months back, too. I'd be happy to answer any of your questions. Regarding the car - we didn't rent on during our first trip - and we probably won't rent one this time either. We found the bus to be a safe, clean, and reliable way to get around the island. We never felt like we had to wait, as there's one coming approx. every 15 minutes. We used a cab service a few times to go in to town for restaurants, etc., and that was fine as well. Everyone feels differently about this, though. Some people rent a car every time and wouldn't do without one. To me, and this is just my opinion, driving every day doesn't feel as much like a vacation.

What might be a good alternative is to rent a Jeep for a day or two to go exploring on your own. There are certain places you can't get to by bus and that you wouldn't want to take a cab to - and a Jeep is a great way to see it all. If you're planning to have dinner at Flying Fishbone - make that reservation for the day you have the Jeep, as the cab fare to the restaurant might be higher than the Jeep rental.

Whatever you decide, you're going to love Aruba - and you'll get a lot of good and helpful information on this board.

I hope this helps. Enjoy.

Although I always rent a car for the week (we got to lots of differnet restaurants in Noord, San Nicolas, Savaneta, in addition to Orangestad) -- if you prefer not to rent a car for the entire trip, renting for a couple of days sounds like a great alternative. Most car rental places will deliver to your hotel, so it really works out pretty well.

I would rent a jeep for the week and get out and do some exploring since its your first time, some of the coolest places cannot be reached by car, I had a blast just riding around the whole island one day from one end to the other, takes all day, pack some drinks and snacks, go see the lighthouse, the caves, the natural bridge is gone but there are smaller ones to see, go to baby beach and have a swim to cool off or just hang out at the hotel on the beach and be lazy, heck your on vacation.

Try this website for some restaurant ideas

Some of my personal favorites are Madame Janettes, El Gaucho or Texas de Brazil (If you are a meat eater) or Driftwood for seafood (owner catches fish himself daily)

and as already mentioned Flying Fishbone (long ride but from what I have heard worth the drive for a romantic dinner) That one you will def need a reservation if you want a table at sunset!

Good luck with your trip I love Aruba so much more than Cancun so maybe it will work out better for u in the end

We've been to Aruba four times and have yet to rent a vehicle. We use taxis or the busses with great ease and going everywhere we want to go. And this is staying on Palm Beach at the Marriott Ocean Club, Eagle Beach at LaCabana and this last time, downtown Oranjestad at the Renaissance Ocean Suites. Like someone else mentioned, however, it's a personal choice.

taminark:

We are scheduled for Cancun for Monday and very nervous. Our TA is no help and says wait until Friday. Don't know that I can.

Thinking of changing to Aruba. How did you do it and who was your Cancun trip booked with?

We are booked thru Travel Impressions thru AAA and have Continental Airlines who will change our flights at no charge per the website. Travel Impressions is giving no information.

Problem is the Travel Impression hotels they use are not all that great. Holiday Inn looks about the best but the price the same as our all inclusive in Cancun and is only a European Plan.

Any and all advice please from anyone!

Seems for some reason my post was edited so the web page I mention is missing!

So if you go to google and search Aruba Restaurant reviews hopefully you can find the page
