First trip to Aruba and Manchebo

Hello:

We are taking our first trip to Aruba in a few months and staying at the Manchebo Beach Resort. This is my first post on the Aruba forum, and I have tried to do some research before asking any redundant questions. If you could please look at my information and either comment or correct me on it, it would be most appreciated.

-We are taking US Airways, so the departure tax should already be included in the ticket price.

-The hotel is about 7 miles from the airport and should cost the two of us about $22.00 USD for a one way transport.

-Places to eat within walking distance of Manchebo include Pizza Bobs, Elliots, Tortuga Grille, Matthews, Pirates Nest, Screaming Eagle, Turtles Nest, Frangiapannis, Dushi Bagels, Duncan Donuts,Subway, and Shon Gecko.

Are there any good "local" places to eat near the hotel? Someone in another post mentioned a trailer in the low rise section across the beach from the Swiss Chalet (?) which serves lunch from 12-2.

-The local bus leaves from right outside the casino with one direction going to the high rise section, and the other to Oranjestad. Can the bus take you to any other places of interest?

-It takes approximately 40 minutes to walk the beach to the high rise section(?) Is there anything worth walking to in the opposite direction?

Thank you again for any information, and we look forward to our first trip to Aruba!

Ingo

You've obviously done your homework! Everyone has their favorites for restaurants -you've mentioned some good ones.

A fun night that I could suggest would be to have cocktails. And enjoy sunset at Bugaloe, then dinner at the sunset grill finished by dancing and an espresso coffee at the Martini Bar at the Radisson-a great introduction to Palm Beach!

Have a great vacation and hope you love Aruba.

You have done your homework well.

According the Chalet Suisse's website, their first reservation is at 5:30 pm so you may want to double check as to their serving lunch.

Which places of interest are you looking to get to via the bus. It is fairly limited in sightseeing for some of Aruba's highlights.

You will be able to walk plain white sand beach south of Manchebo for 1.1 mile http://www.wikimapia.org/#lat=12.5352938&lon=-70.0496864&z=15&l=0&m=b&gz=0;-700632048;125290936;0;113110;1288;100123;23175;82529;38195;75407;48924;68704;56649;59069;62657;44826;63086;35609;72527;24298;81110;24298;93985;16758;103855;7541;108576;0

Walking the beach northward from the Manchebo to Palm beach is possible, but it will not be 100% beach. There are rock cliffs wikimapia.org/…b which will force you out towards the roadside in spots between the Amsterdam Manor and Divi Phoenix.. I do not know how long it will take you in the heat, but it is 1.7 miles. http://www.wikimapia.org/#lat=12.5453268&lon=-70.0546432&z=15&l=0&m=b&gz=0;-700634193;125406350;98919;215941;91624;207354;85187;201699;84328;189342;84328;174681;84328;160858;84972;137819;43773;69958;23818;45033;0;0

To see the island, I would suggest a tour. ABC Jeep Tours is very well respected.

When taking the bus downtown, I suggest that you board in front of Costa Linda. It is one stop before the stop adjacent to the Alhambra Casino . At times, the crowd at the casino stop may be too many to board. Doesn't happen often, but it does happen.

You are going to love Aruba.

Can anyone else confirm that Subway has closed? We liked it there for a quick sandwich for lunch.

We just got back, and the Subway around the corner from Manchebo was still open. If youre looking for a quick sandwhich during the earlier part of the day, definitely go to Dushi Bagels. Its right in front of the hotel next door, Aruba Beach Club, and they taste great.

We also ate at Driftwood, which is downtown and a quick cab ride. They own their own charter fishing boats, so their catch of the day is only hours old. If you're doing AI at Manchebo, you get one dinner off-site for staying longer than 4 days, and Driftwood is one of the restaurants on their list. I recommend going there.

Glad Subway is still open - thanks! Every time we've been in there, it's been pretty crowded.

Hello,

You will love the Manchebo if you seek rest and relaxation on a wonderful beach with a friendly staff. We just booked our 4th trip for Feb 2011.

All of your information is correct - departure tax included in ticket price, cab fare, and restaurants correct.

We take the bus often during our stay. We go into Orangestad (town) and to the high rise section. The stop to go to the high rise section is across the street and across from the medical buildings by the hospital. For town, other posters have answered so I will not repeat. :) If you wanted to go to other places by bus, you would probably need to go to the bus terminal in town to catch a different route. A day tour would probably be a better option. On our first trip, we also did the full day ABC Jeep tour. It was a great way to see the island and learn the lay of the land.

If you want great local food (not walking distance), try Gostoso for dinner one night. This is in Orangestad. The food there is wonderful! And the staff is incredible!

For inexpensive breakfasts, we are at Dushi Bagels most mornings.

We always make a visit to Pizza Bob's for a large pie - this way we have lunch for the next day.

Last year was the first time we ever went to Subway - either in Aruba or the USA. Being born and raised in Philly, it would be sacrilegious for us to set foot in Subway here when we can get a hoagie nearly every other block. It was a good, quick lunch -nice and fresh. We'll go again next year.

We always have good food at Matthew's, mostly go for lunch - very nice staff there also.

Have a great trip! The anticipation is half of the fun!
