Aruba or other Caribeean destinations for single traveler??

Dear Forum,

I'm 40 years old single female and for the first time decided to take a trip on my own:)

I did some research, asked friends on what destinations should be a match but still in limbo...and this is where I need your help.

I'm looking for nice, quite beaches for down time, some water activities but also at night like to meet people. Not into club nightlife but good bars with good crowd will do it.

I prefer more exotic destinations than too developed, commercialized. The price is not an issue as long as I feel safe.

I first checked pacific islands as is closer to me but all look to be oriented towards honeymooner and romance and that's exactly what I'm not looking forward to spend 7 nights:)

I heard Aruba could be what I'm looking for, nice beaches for "me" time, water activities and adults crowds.

I'm looking forward to your suggestions whether is Aruba or other Caribbean destinations and what resorts you recommend.

Thanks

aruba is certainly a couples island... but there have been many people on here that have travelled alone and love it!

There are plenty of friendly bars, and restaurants. Where you can pull up a stool and make friends. Single or coupled... As for 'Me' time, you cant go wrong with aruba. Very relaxing. Especially the lowrise section. The issue with the lowrise area is, is that there are less people down there. there is also less to do within walking distance. so though the setting is a bit more serene and caribbean.... you may not have the opportunity to make as many friends.

The divi (where we stay) is historically a couples resort in the lowrise area, but there are ALWAYS people at the bars that seem to be new friends. We have also seen singles there.

Also - the bus transit system between the high rise, low rise, and downtown area is cheap, efficient, and safe.

Also - aruba isnt much of a party island - so its pretty low key. You may find an occasional bar that is 'hoppin', but this island doesnt have that downtown cancun vibe at all! Not that you're looking for that, but just thought i would throw that out there!

search a little bit in the forums search option. you will likely see some more hits/responses.

Aruba attracts couples, families with children and single travelers. The island is very safe to navigate on your own; just use common sense as you would at home. The beaches are lovely and the local people are wonderful.

If you are seeking an area that is not too commercialized, then Eagle Beach may be a better choice for you. It is home to the low-rise properties. That said, there are less offerings in this area in the way of restaurants, shopping and nightlife. The Palm Beach area is home to the high-rise properties (ie Radisson, Hyatt, Marriott, etc), and is in close proximity to many restaurants, shops, bars and casinos. You always have the option of taking a taxi or public transportation to the high-rise area or downtown Oranjestad.

As you are traveling alone, I would also suggest a half or full-day jeep tour of the island. It is a great way to see some of the more popular sights as a first-time visitor, and will also give you the opportunity to meet other travelers. Two vendors on the island are DePalm and ABC. Your hotel concierge can assist in making these arrangements for you.

Good luck, whatever you decide.

We recommended Eagle Beach to a single friend of a family member. We suggested depending on budget, Amsterdam Manor, Bucuti and Manchebo Beach. She ended up at Manchebo and loved it. Said it was a great vacation. There aren't too many islands that we've been to, that we would feel totally comfortable makkng that recommendation.
