Airport problems

What is going on at the airport? We arrived at airport 3 hrs early for a 4:30 flight this past sat. Spent almost 6 hrs in lines worse then any trip to Disney. The worst was getting through customs. Flight was held nearly 2 hrs so people could make flight. Per United website delay was due to "airport conditions". Conditions were deplorable.

Saturday is always a busy day in Aruba with a surge of people. At USA customs and immigration the delay is usually the longest due to security issues. The rest of the airport has actually been running smoothly. I've been there every weekend for the past 6 in a row. Flights have been generally on time. It is simply the volume of people on Saturday and sometimes Sunday that simply backs up the system.

I know Saturday is usually bad, but your right something sounds off. I guess I have been very lucky and never ran into those lines. Half hour to 40 minutes for us to get through the lines, but we usually don't travel on Saturday's. Although, last year on a Saturday in February we did and again zero problems. 6 hours that is crazy.

Actually, we left last Thursday and it was ridiculously slow at this airport. This was likely one of the slowest airports we have ever encountered. Our flight was with Delta at 4:05 pm. We checked out of the Tam around noon and decided to just head to the airport instead of sticking around for some lunch. A taxi was right there, so we were at the airport before 12:30. There was already a bit of a line-up, but none at the kiosks. We tried to check-in at the kiosk but it wasn't reading our passports. We finally gave up and got into the now slightly longer line-up. Then we saw a Delta agent helping someone else at a kiosk and when he ws done he helped us (with one in line). He told us they were having issues. Besides not reading documents it was messing up our seat selections we'd made months ago. A De Palm bus had come in and now the line was enormous, and it was just not moving at all. It took about 2 hours to go as far as what should have taken 10-15 minutes. To top it off a pipe overhead was dripping on us (it had rained very heavily that morning) Luckily the customs line wasn't too long, but for those behind us in that Delta line, plus other flights, we knew it was a different story. People were rushing to the gate and boarding last minute. We were glad we had decided to go early and had nearly 4 hours at that airport. We needed it. Oh, and Delta sent us a survey about our experience for just that leg of our 5 legs of flights (return - and no other problems anywhere else). So was it Delta or was it the airport? I don't know, but it was pretty awful.

We left on a Saturday in October, got there 3 hours early, lines were long but moved very quickly. We were sitting in the airport longer than I would have liked....because the only thing to do then is spend $$$$$ - especially now that there is a casino right outside the gate to help kill time!

We were there last Tue. flying on Jet Blue at 1:45 p.m. Arrived at 12 noon. No problems until we get to U.S. C & I. Only 3 or 4 agents working. SEVERAL people were having finger/hand prints scanned; most took over 5 mins. each. Our agent had to scan our passports 3 times - "computers acting up". The line should have been no longer than 20 mins., but took us 45 mins. Made it to the gate as our flight was beginning to board. Then we had to wait about 20 mins. after scheduled take-off time for late-comers.

The only time we have experienced long lines at U.S. C & I was on Sat.; we have been there when the line started at the luggage carousel and took over an hour to get through.

Starting to wonder if it would be better clearing customs back in the states.

Something must be happening... We have traveled on the Sat of week 7, the last day going home, a very busy day.

It had been crowded, so many families and it usually took 2 and 1/2 hrs.

So what's up? This sounds unusual? Maybe not enough staff

We got to the airport 3 hours ahead on 12/8/12. US customs was the slowest part-they had 3-4 agents working, then as the line backed up 4 more agents came out. We still ended up with plenty of time to wait. The casinos were closed :( Probably not a bad thing though-saved me some $. I saw SanNic44 signing books-I was wishing I had 'real' books-I would have stopped (they are all on my Kindle).

I would leave earler -4 hrs perhaps. Even if they work out the problems, being the weekend after the holidays it's bound to be extra busy. If you're not driving/dropping off a car, I'd take a cab and not a transfer bus. That way you can beat the biggest crowds from the buses. Worst case scenario it'snot so busy and you have time to relax
