Cancun or Aruba

Does anyone have any opinions they'd like to share on Cancun vs. Aruba? We are planning a group trip for Aug 2007. No one in the group has been to Cancun or Aruba, so we are open to any suggestions or comments you'd like to share.

Thanks!

It all depends who is going, their interests and time of travel.

Both have equally good nice caribbean turqiose water, lots of water activity, good dining, resorts. In august you run in to chance of potential hurricane in cancun (much much less chance in Aruba).

Aruba Pros:

Weather in August(lesser chance of hurricane),

better for scuba (however 50 miles south oc cancun in Akumal has very good diving /day excursion)

Safer

Gambeling/ casino

Cancun Pros:

Better resorts (more luxary , and more better AI)

Night Life (cancun is better for singles, and equally as good for couples and families)

less Expensive

Closer (distant wise).

Conclusion:

Both are my faviorte places

if single go to cancun.

For other people in August , the edge goes to Aruba. (Dec-May Edge goes to cancun.

We are all married and looking forward to escaping the children and the daily grind. I've done some looking around and they both appeal to me....then again any where warm and sunny appeals to me since we don't get out much without the kids.

Thank you for the tid bits. I will share with the group and go from there.

I just got back in June from Aruba. Wonderful place. I also is planning for a family reunion trip in July 2007.

For just my family, I will chose Aruba in a heart beat. Great relaxing place. Awesome beaches. Great food.

But for a big family reunion trip, we chose Playa Del Carmen. Due to the distance, also, there are more things to do in Playa, near Cancun for shopping, near Cozumel for diving so there are lots of choice if the families don't have the same activities taste.

Playa Del Carmen? I may have to look into that as well. What made you choose that over like Cancun or Jamaca etc? Where are you staying? Is it better to go through a travel agent or did you book yourself?

Playa is about 45minutes - 1hr south from Cancun and right accross from Coz.

There will be 18 of us, all family members. And to get a place that EVERYONE love is almost impossible. The males in our families love to fish and dives, the females love to shop. And we have 8 kids range from 5-14yrs. Also most of us are from the East coast, san my fam from TX and another from CA. So Playa seems like a logical central location.

For the boys, we can go to Coz for diving and fishing. Cancun is shopping meca for the girls and the beachs in Playa are relatively less crowded for the kids. So that's how the decision was made.

But again, just for the 4 of my family, we are heading back to Aruba for sure next year in another trip. Aruba is handed down a fantastic place. Much much nicer beach.

Simply put. Mexico... food and water worries. Aruba...no worries at all! Both have great water and beach. Everyone on the island of Aruba speaks English. Mexico...you guessed it, not so. If you can afford Aruba go there. But, Playa is nice...check on the hurricane damage before you go!

We went to Aruba last October and just returned from Cancun a few weeks ago. We are in our 40's and went to Aruba alone, but took two teen and two twenty-somethings to Cancun. We will definitely be returning to Aruba hopefully many more times but will probably not return to Cancun. Aruba is definitely one happy island and we always felt everyone was trying to make sure we had a great time, which we did. Cancun is still rebuilding after Wilma and you have to be careful when you leave the resort. The next to the last day of our trip our daughter had her wrist pocketbook stolen. Aruba would definitely be my recommendation.

It seems that everyone is telling you "Aruba, Aruba ARUBA!". I have to disagree.

I, too, stayed in Playa del Carmen (which I would recommend over Cancun), then traveled to Aruba, and will be returning to PDC again this summer (NO plans to return to Aruba). There is just such a wide variety of things to do in Mexico vs. Aruba. Sure, they both have gorgeous water and great beaches, both have great food (although Aruba meals were VERY expensive IMO, not so in Mexico), water is great in Aruba, just drink bottled water in Mexico to avoid problems (although must resorts in Mexico do have filtered water and filtered water to make ice for drinks). You also have the Mayan ruins in Mexico, the cenotes, the jungle, World Class snorkeling and Scuba (just OK snorkeling in Aruba), easy to access other islands (ie: Cozumel, Isla Mujeres; NOT so easy to travel between the ABC islands), great natural parks in Mexico such as XCaret and Xel-Ha with resonible prices, Dolphins swims available in Mexico (not aware of any in Aruba?) etc. etc. As far as hurricanes: Chances are slim to none that a hurricane will hit while you are there. It's not like they happen every day people! Just be sure to buy trip insurance, as you should with ANY major vacation package to ANYWHERE. You just never know.

It seems like you said...with a wide variety of people attending this group trip, Mexico would be the ideal choice as there is so much to offer hat everyone within your group should be able to find something to do and enjoy themselves.

Another bonus: it is closer to the states = less travel time. And, of course MUCH less expensive to stay in 4, 5 even 6 star properties than in Aruba. All-Inclusive resorts much more frequent in Mexico then in Aruba, if that is a consideration (plenty of non-AIs, as well).

I got the impression that Aruba is full of timeshare owners, many more "elderly" couples visit there. Being in my mid-20s, I felt extremely young there.

Please know this is just my opinion on this two destinations. I do not wish to offend anyone, as I know many die-hard Aruba fans will claim Aruba is the #1 destination for anyone anytime.
